The School is now seeking to appoint a Lead at Senior Lecturer level in Simulation and Interprofessional Learning. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to be part of the team as the Medical School, which opened to students in September 2023, enters its next phase of development.

Main duties of the job

The Simulation and Interprofessional Learning [IPL] Lead is responsible for ensuring that the Medical School provides clinical simulation education that is fully integrated within the curriculum for medical students. As well as designing appropriate simulation working areas and IPL scenarios, they will also make a significant contribution to clinical skills, practical teaching and assessment and contribute to the delivery of a high-quality student experience, working with the Phase Leads to ensure the MBChB programme curriculum is supported in respect of their discipline.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. To ensure that clinical simulation education is fully integrated within the curriculum of the medical degree programme across all student year groups.

2. To design and lead appropriate simulation working areas and interprofessional learning (IPL) scenarios in association with our Physician Associate (PA) MSc. and the Schools of Nursing and Midwifery, and Allied Health and Community.

3. To take part in simulation sessions, ensuring timely feedback and effective debriefing to both medical and PA students as required.

4. To lead on educationally and technologically innovative simulation which can meet the requirements of the Medical School, and where appropriate across other healthcare programmes, including those in the Schools of Nursing and Midwifery and Allied Health and Community.

5. To provide appropriate training to both tutors and technicians in clinical simulation and Interprofessional Learning (IPL) techniques.

6. To provide appropriate training in assessment techniques using simulation.

7. To take steps to ensure that the simulation team, the equipment, and the delivery of the clinical simulations including IPL create an appropriate learning environment to support the students in their training and assessment.

8. To work closely with those responsible for the Healthcare undergraduate teaching programmes to develop an integrated approach to using simulation effectively as part of medical student education.

9. To devise and implement any summative simulation scenarios as required by the Medical School.

10. To encourage and support staff and students who wish to undertake student projects or research in clinical simulation and / or IPL including PA dissertations.

11. Provide ongoing support for the MBChB Practice Based Learning (PBL) programme as required, both formative and summative, with appropriate technical support and with appropriately trained personnel.

12. To engage in research and scholarship, disseminating findings through conference presentations and journal articles, books, book chapters and other forms appropriate to the discipline.

13. To develop and / or collaborate on funding bids for research and / or knowledge exchange as appropriate.

14. To liaise with the Schools Quality Lead to ensure that simulation training is at the required level and has appropriate monitoring systems in place for risk assessment, health and safety considerations and staff training, both technical and educational.

15. To participate fully in the life of the School and carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Dean of School or their nominee.

16. Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job; participate in appropriate training activities and encourage and support staff in their development and training.

17. Take steps to ensure and enhance personal health, safety, and well-being and that of other staff and students.

Person Specification

Skills

Essential

Demonstrable ability to enthuse, motivate and facilitate student learning using a variety of methods of learning and teaching including online modalities. Ability to enhance research within simulation and IPL and / or medical education with peer-reviewed publications suitable for inclusion in Research Excellence Framework (REF) submission. Demonstrable commitment to diversity and inclusion, and to health and well-being issues in both staff and students. Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate confidently and clearly with a range of people including students, lecturers, managers, representatives of external organisations and the public, both orally and in writing. Knowledge of the Skills & Simulation requirements of the GMC related to health care courses. Evidence of effective and constructive liaison with members of a range of health-related disciplines in academia and the NHS.

Experience

Essential

Experience of teaching relevant subject area degree programmes at undergraduate or postgraduate level, including experience in teaching healthcare students including delivering IPL. For Senior Lecturer level: Significant experience of teaching subject area. Experience in the development of Skills and Simulation learning opportunities as well as knowledge of their opportunities and limitations in health-related courses within the higher education environment and / or clinical setting. For Senior Lecturer level: Significant experience in a higher education setting ideally teaching medical students. Current research and or scholarly activity in the field of simulation and IPL or medical education. For Senior Lecturer level: Track record of research and scholarly activity related to the field of simulation and IPL or medical education, producing excellent outputs from research. Evidence of making a significant contribution to both student recruitment and support activities (or willingness to do so).

Desirable

Experience of doctoral supervision.

Qualifications

Essential

A good first degree in a relevant subject area. PhD in a field related to simulation and IPL (for Lecturer, nearing completion) and /or relevant and equivalent professional experience. A UK recognised healthcare profession qualification and relevant registered experience in a UK regulated healthcare profession.

Desirable

Essential for Senior Lecturer: PG Cert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (or equivalent) and / or Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy / Advance HE.
