Lead in the management of the ward. Work with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure that staffs have access to information and relevant training. Work collaboratively with senior nursing staff within the unit to develop an effective, quality patient focused service. Work collaboratively within the Trust to manage the ‘Clinical Governance Agenda Nursing strategy’, ‘Infection Control’, ‘Matrons Charter’, National Service Frame works, safeguarding and any other initiatives which impact on the service. An emphasis of the role is not only to maintain the current service delivery but also to undertake service developments in line with NHS modernisation strategies in order to improve service delivery and meet national targets.

Main duties of the job

To have continuing responsibility for the:

Management of ward/unit and staff over a 24 hour period Development and updating of protocols and related practice in line with current research Care delivered to patients and the setting and monitoring of standards of care Selection, deployment, training and development of staff and students Assessment, development and implementation of specialised nursing packages of care. Collaborative working with the multi disciplinary team to ensure that standards of care are consistently maintained

• Provides expert clinical advice to ensure appropriate treatment and care is delivered to the patient at all times

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To lead ward/unit team ensuring the maintenance of a high and safe standard of care. To provide specialist clinical knowledge and practice to patients and carers within the department/ward. To use knowledge & nursing skills to support nursing, medical and therapy staff in the provision of the expert care throughout the ward/unit. To undertake aspects of the extended role of the nurse following appropriate training. To be responsible for setting, implementing and monitoring acceptable standards of care for patients within the ward/unit in conjunction with the junior sisters, team members and the multi professional team. Act as a mentor to deputy ward managers and junior staff in order to develop their roles both practically and managerially. To assess the needs of patients and their carers promptly, ensuring that they receive the highest quality of care and work collaboratively with other disciplines to facilitate best practice. To perform and assist with agreed procedures appropriate to the role and function of the ward manager within the guidelines set down by the North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust. To participate in research, promote nursing research and recognise how this informs clinical practice.

Registered Nurse Post basic nursing qualification in a related nursing speciality Teaching qualification or evidence of ability to teach Educated to degree level or demonstrate equivalent experience
