The Hospital was rated "Good" by the CQC in February 2022 and the Emergency Department was rated "Outstanding" for leadership and "Good" in all other areas.

The Emergency Department has recently seen a significant expansion with a new majors department built in 2021 and a new paediatric area completed this year. Ongoing building work will see improvements to our remaining areas.

This post is for a fixed term contract for 6 months.

About us

The Team is friendly and dynamic and these posts are part of a planned significant expansion in senior Medical Staff numbers. We currently have 9 Consultants, 1 Associate Specialist, 12 Registrar/Specialty Doctors and 15 Junior Doctors, supported by additional locum shifts.

We have a separate GP streaming service which sees 40 patients per day which would have previously been seen by the Emergency Department.

We have a very good working relationship with the Trust Executive, who share our vision of a thriving ED delivering excellent clinical care.

The Post

The post will be designated Clinical Fellow (ST3-ST5) (Emergency Medicine). The post will be on a fixed term 12 month contract This post will be full time, taking part in a full shift rota and paid according to the NHS Junior Doctor contract at ST3-5 level, with appropriate enhancements for out of hours work and average hours in excess of 40/week and a full allocation of time for study leave and annual leave The employer will be the James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust The Trust is willing to consider any requests for flexible working arrangements according to individual circumstances The post holders will have a named supervisor and will be supported in developing their CV for whatever careers plans they have. Where appropriate, this may include paid time for special interest activities away from the ED.

The post is for 6 months in the first instance, but could be extended by mutual agreement.

The Rota

The Emergency Medicine Department works a full shift system. The ST3-ST5 Clinical Fellows/ Specialty Doctors are rostered to provide 24 hour presence. Weekends are currently 1 in 4 and hours per week are variable, but average 38hrs/wk of clinical work. Night shifts will be on a 1 in 8 basis

Other Responsibilities

The appointees will take an equal share in the duties, clinical and non-clinical, of the department with their Specialty Doctor colleagues. There is no on-call room as the night duties are rostered as full shifts.

Subject to the provisions of the Terms and Conditions of Service to observe the Trusts agreed policies and procedures drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the Trust.

To observe local and national employment and personnel policies and procedures, and to comply with Regional and Trust Health and Safety policies.

To assume responsibility for and facilitate contact from members of staff with delegated duties for personally accountable patient care.
