Brief Description

We have an exciting opportunity to join the largest and most established Control Centre within Network Rail, based at York Rail Operating Centre.

We are looking for a Route Control Manager to join our team to lead our day-to-day operations. Key objectives include managing the delivery of our safety plans, compliance and competence activities, design and delivery of our people strategy and driving and continuously improving our performance within the Control.

The successful candidate will have significant command and control experience in the Railway operations sector, exceptional people skills to maintain our excellent relationships with our train and freight operators and other key industry partners along with a proven record of effective people management.

This is an opportunity to lead a team that operate the live running of the railway on a daily basis. Are you up for the challenge? 

About the role (External)

Role and Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

Lead the implementation of our safety plans in line with our vision of ‘everyone home safe everyday'

Manage a large operating budget to maximise value for money.

Lead and review investigations into safety of the line incidents in accordance with our safety standards and statutory requirements.

Accountable for driving continuous improvement within the Control processes and procedures in line with the Standard and National Operating Procedures which positively impact safety and the passenger experience.

Implementation of organisational change, liaising with senior stakeholders and leading on Trade Union consultation and engagement with staff.

Deliver our recruitment strategy and ensure our operational level colleagues are competent and confident in their work.

Lead incident reviews and report on our progress against Key Performance Indicators

Contribute to the development and maintenance of up to date operational and safety policies and procedures

Lead the wider control function in the delivery of the core objectives associated with a high performing control centre.

Essential

·Extensive Railway / Operations experience

·Experience of leading and managing large teams within a control, logistics or operations environment

·Experience of strategic decision-making

·Good negotiating skills and ability to make objective decisions

·Able to effectively manage conflict, influence others and work under pressure

·Knowledge of Network Rail and Train Operating Companies within the Route and the key aspects of their business

·Knowledge of Train Operator performance regime and targets

·Understanding of operational rules and regulations

·Good geographical knowledge of applicable Routes

·Due to the nature of the work, enhanced security vetting is required for this role.

Desirable

·Previous experience as a Controller

·Level 1 investigator

·Controllers assessor qualification

·Rail Incident Commander qualification and experience

·Tactical Incident Commander qualification and experience
