Job summary

On average the post holder will provide 1 half day session of general obstetric cover during a normal working week. These duties include antenatal/postnatal ward rounds, CS lists, and cover of the DAU unit.

There will be a weekly academic session designated for research in the chosen subspeciality based at St. George's Hospital. The postholder would be expected to carry out and develop a research programme, which would fit in with the overall research strategy of the department and meet the requirements for MFM subspecialist training.

The post-holder will also participate in the senior registrar (ST 6/7) equivalent on call rota. This is a 1 in 8 rota working night shifts ( either weekday (Monday to Thursday) of weekends (Saturday to Sunday) and weekends ( on Saturday and Sunday). They will also cover the Delivery Suite from 1 to 8pm (Mon-Fri) on a 1 in 8 rotating rota. This rota is supported by the junior registrar rota and acute gynaecology rota.

Main duties of the job

This post will be based in The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, London. The successful candidate will be expected to work with professional colleagues and local managers in the efficient running of the Service. He/she will be expected to participate in the Trust's system of governance and audit, and maintain their CME/CPD. He/she will also have a commitment to participate in the Trust's professional development activities. The appointee will be expected to observe the Trust's agreed policies and procedure, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters, and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the Trust.

Prof Basky Thilaganathan (STPS) is an Educational Supervisor as defined by the deanery and is actively involved in clinical work (4 PAs) academic activities (1 PA) and RCOG duties as Clinical Director of the National Centre for Maternity Improvement (2 sessions). Over the course of the training programme, the trainees will have in rotation, 5 clinical sessions per week of MFM and specialty clinics, delivery suite sessions, elective Caesarean lists and resident on-call sessions.

About us

Children & Women's Directorate includesPaediatric medicine and surgery; gynaecology, gynae-oncology, reproductive medicine, urogynaecology, fetal medicine; neonatology; obstetrics; clinical genetics; and clinical psychology.

The Feto-Maternal Medicine Unit has approximately 1000 fetal medicine, 600 fetal cardiology, 500 fetal invasive diagnostic/therapeutic procedures and 6000-day assessment unit patient episodes per annum. There are approximately 350 regional in-utero transfers made for perinatal management in cases of high-risk fetal or maternal complications. The unit delivers care to the 5400 women booked for routine antenatal care at St Georges Hospital each year. The unit routinely accepts referrals mainly from the 12 district general hospitals in the South-West London Region which book in total, approximately 40,000 women per annum for antenatal care. Extra-regional referrals are also received for complex fetal surgical procedures and maternal co-morbidity from the Northern Ireland, Wessex region and certain Hospital in the North-East Thames region.
