Station Safety and Competence Manager

Responsible for managing the competence cycle of South Western Railway train dispatchers by providing ongoing mentoring, coaching, and support. This ensures they maintain the skills required for safety-critical activities, such as train dispatch, in line with relevant RSSB Rule Books. The role also involves supporting the review of operational incidents to continuously improve safety practices and uphold high standards of competence.
Your main responsibilities will be:
Staff Competency: Schedule and conduct assessments/monitoring of all assigned staff to maintain competence. Ensure accurate documentation and database updates for all assessments. Safety Compliance: Monitor staff adherence to company standards, including Personal Track Safety, train dispatch, and other relevant roles. Lead regular safety audits on specific topics and provide feedback on findings. Coach line managers to identify development needs for individuals following operational incidents. Conduct thorough investigations into accidents and incidents, including recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Risk Management: Assist the stations function in creating and reviewing risk assessments and local operating instructions. Safety Collaboration: Build and maintain strong relationships with company health and safety representatives. Provide expert safety advice, assistance, and support to the stations team, including issuing safety alerts as needed. Offer guidance and support to the stations team on all aspects of workplace safety. Operational Support: Collaborate with the Safety & Operational Standards functions to deliver safety and operational initiatives.As a minimum, you will need to have:
At least 2 years of operational experience in a railway or similar regulated industry. Relevant experience working in the regulated railway environment with knowledge of safety and operational standards. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to influence decision-makers and improve the behaviour of managers and frontline employees regarding safety and operational tasks. Willingness to learn and adapt to the specific requirements of a railway operational role. Understanding of Railway Regulations and Rules.Desirable
A1 assessor qualification (NVQ level 3 or equivalent) or willingness to work towards it. Formal safety management qualification (IOSH Managing Safety or equivalent) or willingness to work towards it.About the location:

Working pattern:
Working an average of 37 hours per week over 5 days
Monday to Friday, standard office hours, with flexibility required for earlier starts and later finishes depending on assessment schedules.
