Job summary

Brookside are seeking an experienced and motivated Lead Occupational Therapist whom is passionate about working with child and adolescents and promoting the value of Occupational Therapy across NEFLT.

The post holder will be a qualified Occupational therapist responsible for the OT teams across Tier 4 services. They will be responsible for the management, oversight, supervision of the team and their clinical cases. They will lead and work collaboratively with the Leadership team on transformation and quality improvement projects that focus on enhancing; the OT provision, the therapeutic offer, the overall operational and clinical provision at Brookside. They will be responsible for complex patient cases to provide specialist OT assessments and interventions, including being professionally and legally accountable.

The post holder will support their leadership colleagues and the service lead and be an effective team member whilst working on OT initiatives. They will have a commitment to collaborative working and actively support and liaise with other health and social care professionals and agencies. They will lead and advocate for the occupational therapy role in transformation projects ensuring AHP OT leadership is recognised trust wide.

Main duties of the job

To have clinical and operational oversight of the OT Team

To provide supervision, management, clinical expertise & specialist advise to support OT team.

To be responsible for oversight& collaborative development of therapeutic programme

To be up to date with evidence base clinical practices that inform the OT interventions provided.

To lead on quality improvement &transformation projects linked to enhancing the OT provision and overall therapeutic provision across Brookside.

To work collaboratively with other leads inhouse & externally on innovative practice.

To be responsible for providing accurate records of information required by the Trust.

To ensure effective risk management by accident/incident reporting, assessing, and controlling risk.

To Lead and develop innovative OT Services that support clinical care pathways for children and young people.

To input into multidisciplinary teams to develop joined up packages of care for children with complex mental health needs.

To ensure OT service models are developed in order to meet the needs of children and their families.

To lead on the delivery of and assist with all the OT Service Level Agreements between NELFT and the Local Authority and NCEL.

To manage a highly complex caseload of children and young people working as an autonomous practitioner within own discipline area.

About us

Starting with NELFT

NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop-in sessions focusing on engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

Probationary Period

This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).

High-Cost Area Supplement

This post also attracts payment for High-Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (minimum payment of £4,313 and a maximum payment of £5,436) (pro rata for part time staff).

Job responsibilities

Clinical

To act as an autonomous, registered health care professional who is legally and professionally accountable for own unsupervised actions guided by the professional code of conduct and Trust guidelines and protocols.

2. Further professional knowledge will have been gained through accredited courses workshops, study and in house training programmes.

3. To be able to initiate referrals to other health professional specialist services and agencies.

4. To provide patients and relatives with information and education thus ensuring they have meaningful choices that promote dignity, independence and quality of life.

5. To ensure practice is supported by research, evidence based practice, literature and peer review.

6. To carry out highly specialist standardised and non-standardised assessments and treatment of children and young people with a variety of complex mental health needs within own competencies, recognising own limitations and seeking advice when necessary.

7. To communicate complex clinical information and intervention plans to children and young people (where appropriate), their parents, carers, staff in other agencies, so that they have an understanding of OT intervention and carry out effective treatment or management of the child.

8. To establish therapy programmes based on evidence based practice designed to enable functional improvement and access to the NICE guidelines

9. To deliver therapy services in a variety of settings hospital, patients homes schools, and in consultation with the child/parent/carers and other multidisciplinary teams including health, education and social services

Leadership

1. To participate in the development of an effective team and the development of productive working relationships throughout the Trust.

2. To actively promote integrated health professional working internally and externally.

3. To facilitate the development of a positive and supportive team culture by taking responsibility for dealing effectively with potential conflict.

4. To take an active interest in working parties and groups within the Trust to develop and improve on service delivery, protocols and guidelines.

5. To participate in the audit process, linking in with the clinical governance agenda.

6. To advise, encourage and share knowledge utilising the latest research and practice development, through literature and peer reviews.

7. To provide transformational leadership in line managing, leading and supporting the OT team on a day to day basis, as well as implementing change arising from national and local agendas.

8. To be a professional lead for all therapists working in the specialist clinical field through exemplary working in evidence based clinical practice. Working in partnership with colleagues in similar roles thus supporting the twinned locality model of support.
