Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Band 5 Registered Nurse to be seconded into an Acting Band 6 Sister in our Outpatients Department at Darent Valley Hospital. This post will be for a period of three months to support the current Band 6 Sisters in order to provide senior nursing leadership in the department.

The successful candidate will have a key role in ensuring that the department provides high quality, patient focused care and support to the nursing and phlebotomy teams.

Main duties of the job

To support the Senior Nursing Team in ensure smooth running of the Outpatients Department and deputize for the Band 7 Senior Sister as required.

To be responsible for the allocation of the nursing and phlebotomy team to the various clinics being held on a daily basis.

To support the staff to deliver individualized, safe and quality care to all patients attending their Outpatient appointments.

To maintain a safe clinical environment.

To enhance the nursing role through the Scope of Professional Practice.

To support and supervise colleagues and to take part in an on-going teaching programme within this specialist area.

To communicate effectively with members of the public and the multi-disciplinary team at all times.

To adhere to ‘Our Values’ for Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust

To ensure that all areas of practice adhere to current NMC guidance.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To support the Senior Sister to manage the department alongside another Band 6 Sister.

To provide and maintain a stable and safe clinical environment for all staff and patients at all times. To ensure support is given to those staff responsible for the assessment, implementation and evaluation of care needs of all outpatients.

Assists with the recruitment and subsequent training and supervision of qualified and unqualified staff, including students, under the guidance of the Senior Sister. Participate in management of the team and appraisals. 

To work across Outpatient Clinics on all Trust sites, as required by the service.

Education and Training

Essential criteria

1 st level Registered Nurse. Advanced Life Support Evidence of CPD

Desirable criteria

Degree or working towards Formal Student Assessor course

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria

Good communication skills both written and verbal Computer literate Demonstrable teaching skills Knowledge in a range of specialities within an NHS Able to work autonomously or as part of a team Able to work on own initiative Knowledge of Microsoft programmes

Desirable criteria

Knowledge and research within specific specialty. Venepuncture & cannulation skills (training will be given) IV drug administration Compression bandaging exprience

Experience

Essential criteria

Minimum 3 years clinical experience in both inpatient and outpatient areas Previous management experience (ward or OPD) in the NHS Experience of mentoring, teaching and assessing all grades of staff.

Desirable criteria

Band 6 post in an Outpatient setting Human Resource Skills/training
