Job summary

Cheshire Occupational Health Service is a collaboration between Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS FT and East Cheshire Trust.

Following service review we are looking for an experienced physiotherapist to join the Occupational Health team to lead on the management and treatment of MSK.

This is a new role and the successful candidate will be pivotal in the design and establishment of the service.

You will hold a clinical caseload providing assessment and physiotherapy to employees at both Trusts across Crewe and Macclesfield sites. You will also work directly with the Head of Occupational Health on health improvement projects across the Trusts.

You will need to have demonstrated experience of working in a band 6 MSK role , be a good communicator and have an interest in developing your specialist skills and knowledge within staff wellbeing and occupational health.

Main duties of the job

To act as an advanced clinical specialist responsible for the triage, assessment and treatment of colleagues referred with musculoskeletal disorders into Occupational Health. To have a specific remit for the management of colleagues with MSK conditions and supporting their management with a biopsychosocial approach as relevant.

To work as part of the wider multi-disciplinary team in to access and act upon relevant diagnostic tests and make relevant onward referral to the pain service and MCATS.

To act as the lead clinician within specialist area, supporting the operational delivery of an MSK Occupational Health function and service development initiative for Leighton and Macclesfield Hospitals, ensuring consistent service delivery.

SERVICE DELIVERY

To act as an expert source of knowledge, offering specialist clinical advice and support to other healthcare professional and agencies across organisational boundaries. To work autonomously to manage a defined highly complex patient caseload whilst working as part of a multidisciplinary team. To contribute to the delivery of the service in a variety of defined clinical settings, which may out-patient and community clinics and the patients home. To respect the individuality, values, cultural and religious diversity of patients, contributing to the provision of a service sensitive to these needs. To utilise highly advanced communication skills to ensure clinical advice and treatment programmes are delivered sensitively, taking into consideration the needs of carers. To gain consent for treatment and motivate patients to comply with treatment programmes, overcoming barriers such as dementia, cognitive impairment, hearing, visual or speech impairment. To comply with the Mental Capacity Act to gain valid and informed consent to specific treatment and intervention for patients who lack capacity to consent themselves. To undertake highly specialist clinical assessment, taking into account all relevant information and clinical reasoning to formulate evidence based individualised treatment plans in agreement with the colleague and their line management. To implement highly specialist individual interventions for colleagues with diverse presentations and highly complex needs. To monitor progress and review treatment plans and interventions to facilitate the achievement of goals. To provide appropriate oral and written information for colleagues and line-managers where relevant. To develop and maintain good working relationships with other healthcare professions, social care and other appropriate agencies, to ensure integrated and high-quality outcomes. To work as a member of the multidisciplinary team, contributing to decisions with regard to Occupational Health care programmes through attendance at case conferences and other multidisciplinary meetings. To maintain accurate documentation in line with professional standards and local policies and procedures. To provide accurate and timely written information and reports to referring agents and other agencies where appropriate. To record and submit clinical activity data as required by the Trust in an accurate and timely manner. To ensure the safe and timely discharge of colleagues from the caseload liaising with other agencies as required. To be responsible for safe and competent use of equipment including the provision of support, education and training to other staff, colleagues and managers as required. To identify appropriate equipment and adaptation needs, liaising with equipment providers, completing paperwork and complying with any tracking, stock control and maintenance systems as required. To prescribe borderline substances as agreed with medicines management committee, dependant on service need. To give and request second opinions where appropriate. To refer for diagnostics X-rays, as appropriate to the role. To take the lead for clinical audit and research within a highly specialist field of practice, developing clinical practice and treatment outcomes. To demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate current research, applying it to practice and disseminating the relevant findings. To support and advise junior staff and students who undertake audit and research within the service.

GOVERNANCE

To maintain professional practice within the context of the Health & Care Professions Council. This includes standards of proficiency, conduct and performance, ethics and continuing professional development. To comply with all relevant professional, Trust and development standards, policies, procedures and guidelines. To support the implementation of Trust, National & Professional guidelines NICE. To maintain competency to practice through CPD activities, producing a personal portfolio which reflects professional development. To evaluate and reflect on professional performance, identify implications for practice. To participate in the Trusts appraisal system, undertaking any identified training and development relating to the post. To gain appropriate support from senior colleagues and participate in supervision/peer review to enhance clinical practice. To fulfil all mandatory training requirements of the Trust, assisting others within the department to fulfil theirs. To develop expert knowledge in a relevant clinical specialist, utilising up to date research and evidence-based practice. To develop and implement clinical pathways, guidelines, and patient resources within the area of clinical speciality. To be a member of a relevant professional association, attending regional and national meetings/conferences as required. To ensure the promotion of safety, wellbeing and interests of patients, staff and visitors to department. Ensure compliance with Trust policies, procedures and guidelines for self and others, by taking action/alerting senior management team if practice appears to contravene policy, or if concerned about any aspect of patient care.

MANAGERIAL/LEADERSHIP

To manage a highly specialist case load, demonstrating appropriate time management and organisation skills. To ensure effective day to day organisation and provision of service to meet service priorities. To provide clinical leadership and support to Occupational Health staff and assistants, through case supervision, and the development and monitoring of competencies. To actively contribute innovate ideas and lead on the development and implementation of service improvements. To contribute to the development and delivery of service objectives, leading on designated projects. To represent the department and contribute to relevant working parties/meetings. Ensure a healthy, safe and secure working environment, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, maintaining accurate documentation and reporting any concerns.

EDUCATION/LEARNING

To initiate, plan, deliver and evaluate formal and informal training to other health care professional staff groups, patients and carers, across a range of settings. To supervise junior staff and assistants, including the implementation of induction and competency training programmes to develop clinical skills. To lead on, coordinate and deliver designated induction and training programmes to meet the requirements of the Trust and any student placements. To supervise, educate and assess the performance of the students, providing timely verbal and written feedback. To lead health promotion activities across organisational boundaries. Take responsibility for own learning and development by recognising and taking advantage of all opportunities to learn, including full participation in KSF/appraisal, supervision, action learning and by maintaining a professional/personal portfolio of learning.
