DUTIES OF POST
ROLE AND DUTIES OF THE TEACHING FELLOWS IN SURGERY
Aims & General Responsibilities
This post is for one year, possibly renewable. The main aim of the posts is two folds. Firstly, to provide clinical training to Undergraduate Surgical Teaching Programme with an opportunity for research and secondly to gain experience in teaching. These post will provide an ample opportunity for research in any desired surgical topic or medical education.
The teaching component of the posts will be accountable to the Director of Clinical Studies and the Consultant Surgeon, coordinating surgical teaching. The research and clinical component will be accountable to an appropriate consultant surgeon relevant to the chosen research project. The teaching fellows will have an office and access to computing facilities as well as administrative secretarial help.
The post holder will be expected to spend at least 75% of their contracted time helping to develop, co-ordinate and deliver a high standard of clinical teaching to the medical students across site and the remainder of their time in research& clinical work. The postholder is expected to pursue a qualification in teaching and research may be educational or clinical.
However, the numbers of students based here varies throughout the year at times there may be greater teaching commitments and at others (particularly June & July) it may be considerably less when the TF may devote much more time to their research, pursuing educational qualification. Thus, flexibility and initiative are essential.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST
The individual work plan will be decided between the DCS, the relevant Consultant Surgeons & the successful appointee. Although “out of hours” clinical work is encouraged where possible the teaching duties must take priority, it is not acceptable to work a night on call and take the next day off. They will be expected to attend regular Faculty Meetings.
A) THE TEACHING COMMITMENT
The teaching will involve a range of activities such as tutorials, skills laboratory, bedside teaching, and dedicated teaching clinics on an out-patient basis. To teach on medical simulation training sessions for Foundation doctors.
Time is allocated for preparation of tutorials, lectures & teaching materials such as handouts. The teaching fellow will be also encouraged to show initiative & develop other teaching ideas such as student case presentations and student grand rounds and role playing. All teaching should be patient-centered approach.
A major emphasis of the teaching will be focused on the core curriculum and clinical skills required for the year 3 students during their main 8-week medical/surgical attachment to the campus. There will also be basic clinical teaching of a very general clinical nature to the two-week introductory course in year 2 in December & March and year 1 in May (with the emphasis on history taking) and a subsequent 8-week secondment at the start of year 3 (with the emphasis on system clinical examination).
Postholder will supervise and co-ordinate acute takes and major surgery lists provide small teaching and surgical skills teaching at Northwick Park and to help with Thursday afternoon surgical lecture programme.
Although the focus is mainly on Year 3 students the TF will have commitment as a Tutor for the Final Year 6 Students from August to December. This will take form of a lecture-based course and small group bedside teaching. The TF will be expected to play an integral role in the organisation and delivery of this course e.g., PACES and OSCE stations.
In addition to teaching undergraduates the post-holder may be asked to teach on one of the many postgraduate courses run on the site, where relevant to their chosen discipline, and to the in-house junior staff both medical and non-medical
Organisational Responsibilities
There will be a strong organisational role. This will involve helping the Undergraduate Co-ordinator’s and DCS on the campus to draw up the medical teaching timetables for year one, year two-and year three. There may also be involvement in helping to establish a patient data base for use in dedicated teaching clinics. The teaching fellow will also be expected to co-ordinate the end of attachment Mock OSCE, mark the Extended Case Assessments & prepare and mark other small tests. They will help organise the clinical component of the final MBBS if held on the site. He/she will become an OSCE examiner after suitable training and may be involved with simulation equipment teaching after suitable training.
