Job summary

We are looking to recruit a clinical psychologist who will work within our innovative Neuropsychiatry Service to provide professional leadership and governance for the development of the psychological therapies in the service.

The Neuropsychiatry Service is an outpatient regional service at St George's Hospital that provides assessment and treatment for adults over the age of 18 with neurological illness or head injuries who have associated psychiatric problems. The service is closely allied to the regional neuroscience centre based at the Atkinson Morley Wing of St. George's Hospital, serving South West London, Surrey and parts of West Sussex. The service is led by nationally recognised Dr Niruj Agrawal, Consultant Neuropsychiatrist, and Honorary Senior Lecturer; with Consultant Neuropsychiatrist, Dr Norman Poole. The team also includes neuropsychiatry and neurology trainees, a specialty doctor, a specialist nurse, and clinical psychology.

Main duties of the job

The post holder's main role will be to take a lead role in the strategic planning and delivery of psychological input within neuropsychiatry and to offer specialist psychological therapy for patients of the service. Psychological treatments offered include individual and group treatments. This post would suit someone who is interested in developing their skills and expertise in professional leadership and governance as well as highly specialist clinical skills.

The post holder will ensure the systematic provision of a high quality specialist psychological therapies service to patients under the care of the Neuropsychiatry team to which the post holder is attached, across all sectors of care. To work autonomously within professional guidelines and exercise responsibility for the systematic governance of psychological practice within the team and to ensure that systems are in place and working effectively for the clinical and professional supervision and support of all other psychological therapy staff within the team.

The post holder will carry out audit, policy and service development and research activities and/or programmes.

The post holder will propose and implement policy and service development changes within the area served by the team/service.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Working within a highly specialised Neuropsychiatry Service, to provide highly developed specialist psychological assessments of clients based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including psychological (and where appropriate to the professional, neuropsychological) tests, self-report measures, rating scales direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the clients care. To formulate plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of a clients mental health problems based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the clients problems, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy. To be responsible for implementing a range of highly specialist psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups, reflecting the current evidence base for the treatment and management of functional neurological disorder and neurological conditions with associated mental health difficulties, employed individually and in synthesis, adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses. To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family or group. To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the psychological treatment of relevant clients, ensuring appropriate assessment, formulation and interventions, communicating with the referral agent and others involved with the care on a regular basis. To provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals and external agencies contributing directly to clients formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan. To ensure that all members of the clinical team have access to a psychologically based framework for the understanding and care of clients of the service, through the provision of advice and consultation and the dissemination of psychological knowledge, research and theory. To undertake risk assessment and risk management for relevant individual clients and to provide both general and specialist advice for psychologists, psychotherapists other professionals and external agencies on psychological aspects of risk assessment and management. To communicate in a highly skilled and sensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of clients under their care and to monitor and evaluate progress during the course of both uni- and multi-disciplinary care. Training and Qualifications

Essential

Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the BPS/HCPC Formal training in supervision of other psychologists / psychological therapists To be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council under the appropriate domain specific title

Desirable

Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice, preferably CBT

Experience

Essential

Assessed experience of working as a qualified clinical psychologist including significant post qualification experience with people diagnosed with functional neurological disorder Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity across the full range of care settings including outpatient, community, primary care, in-patient and residential care settings including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients' psychological care and treatment, both as a professionally qualified care co-ordinator and also within the context of a multi-disciplinary care plan Experience of teaching, training and/or professional and clinical supervision

Experience of supervised provision of evidence-based interventions for people with functional neurological disorder Specific experience of supervised provision of CBT and/or EMDR Experience of professional management of qualified and pre-qualified clinical psychologists Experience of multi-professional management of teams or services within the designated specialty Experience of representing the profession in local policy fora Experience of the application of psychological therapies in different cultural contexts

Knowledge & Skills
