The Technical Director’s duty is to lead, nurture and grow the creative team at UNIT9, ensuring we are best in class and pushing boundaries of technology and creativity at all times. They also are responsible for technical pitching, supporting the new business and pitch teams with research, technical approach, and client presentations. The Technical Director leads the development production process and definition and supervision, ensuring processes are constantly evolving. They also collaborate on the R&D strategy to cement UNIT9 at the bleeding edge of innovation.

Responsibilities:

Project:

  • Uphold the rigorous standards and requirements outlined by our overall client.
  • Collaborate with the New Business and Production teams to vet incoming opportunities, proactively pitch ideas and determine best tech approach.
  • Translate business requirements into technical specifications, prototyping where necessary to resolve unknowns.
  • Identify and mitigate technical risks, troubleshoot issues, and implement effective solutions.
  • Drive the technical vision and strategy, making informed decisions regarding technology, tools, and frameworks.
  • Validate the feasibility of creative, UX/UI design concepts, providing technical consultation to design teams.
  • Accurately scope and estimate project execution, assisting the Resourcing team with finding the right profiles on projects.
  • Create and maintain the boilerplates as the source of truth throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Setup infrastructure and architecture, including cloud projects, code repositories, and deployment pipelines.
  • Conduct regular code reviews to ensure consistency and quality of all code commits.
  • Serve as the primary point-of-contact for all technical matters related to the project.
  • Oversee vendor and technology partner relationships to enhance the capabilities

Team:

  • Lead technical recruitment, ensuring our technical capabilities are scaling in line with the rest of the business and making sure our talent acquisition and onboarding processes are the best they can be.
  • Guide the direction of the development team alongside other Heads of Departments and the Leadership Team.
  • Manage and mentor the development team. Provide technical leadership and guidance throughout the development process,
  • Implement performance optimization and monitoring strategies, ensuring employee growth and providing clear and actionable career progression and succession planning.
  • Contribute to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Support the growth of junior team members through mentoring and training initiatives.
  • Engage positively and proactively with other disciplines to improve understanding and collaboration.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and knowledge sharing within the technical team.

Required Qualifications:

  • 8+ years in software development.
  • 3+ years in a Technical Director (or similar) role.
  • Strong proficiency in Unity game engine.
  • Strong proficiency in Web projects including WebGL, 8th wall, Three.js, React
  • Solid understanding of backend requirements
  • Extensive experience in game development on various platforms.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Experience leading and mentoring a team of developers.
  • Experience with custom shader development.
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (Google Cloud preferred).
  • Experience developing AR/VR/MR projects.
  • Knowledge of accessibility and security best practices.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
