Research Associate in Atmospheric Sciences
2 months ago
Applications are invited for a Research Associate in Atmospheric Sciences position, to study how land-use variability in the Amazon impacts rainfall from convective to regional scales, using the first kilometre resolution numerical simulations of land-use change covering the entire Amazon region. The Research Associate in Atmospheric Sciences will be funded through the UK Natural Environment Research Council Grant “Convective-scale Impacts of Deforestation on Amazonian Rainfall” led by Dr. Luis Garcia-Carreras at the University of Manchester, with opportunities to work with project partners at the UK Met Office and in Brazil.
The high resolution of the numerical simulations represents a step-change in our ability to model tropical rainfall and its interactions with the land surface. This provides a unique opportunity to explore the interaction of local and regional-scale processes, which past studies have shown to have opposite effects on rainfall, and how these processes may change in a future climate. The work will represent a significant advance in our understanding of forest-rainfall feedbacks, and there is the potential for several high-impact publications arising from the project. You will also help coordinate workshops with government bodies and stakeholders in the Amazon to ensure the research outputs can best inform land-use planning and climate-change adaptation policies in the region.
You will conduct research to meet the project objectives to 1. describe the processes through which land-use variability impacts rainfall from convective to regional scales (including feedbacks with mesoscale convective systems), 2. quantify the net impact of deforestation on rainfall patterns and intensities from hourly to interannual timescales in the present climate, and the relative roles of land-use and global-climate change for future rainfall, and 3. evaluate the representation of these processes in operational climate models and determine how the uncertainty in climate simulations can be reduced. You will help run the numerical simulations underpinning the project, analyse these data in collaboration with project partners at the UK Met Office and in Brazil (INPE, University of Taubate and Amazonas State University), and will help coordinate two workshops bringing together local authorities and government bodies for research and protection of the Amazon. You will also be able to dedicate a proportion of their time to pursue career development activities beyond the project, including opportunities to contribute to teaching, outreach activities or to develop their own research ideas.
As this role involves research at a postgraduate level, applicants who are not an EEA national or a national of an exempt country and who will require sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route of the UK Visas and Immigration’s (UKVI) Points Based System in order to take up the role, will be required to apply for an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) Certificate and will need to obtain this prior to making any official visa application UKVI)
What you will get in return:
Fantastic market leading Pension scheme Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays Additional paid closure over the Christmas period Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers
