At St Pancras Rehabilitation Unit there is a strong emphasis on patient-centred assessment, evidence-based care planning, self- management and culturally sensitive care. The SPRU nursing team pride themselves in having a unique role in completing detailed patient-centred assessment, care planning and the implementation of treatment strategies that are based on evidence-based practice. The SPRU nursing team also have a unique role in identifying, assessing and supporting patients with self-administration of medication (SAM). 

The Nursing team in SPRU has strong links with specialist nursing teams such as the Rapid Response, Tissue Viability, Diabetic Nurses, District nursing and the Palliative Nurse Specialists. There is an embedded multi-professional shared skills programme on the unit.

Main duties of the job

The role will be based in our St Pancras Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit.
The St Pancras Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit in Camden has consistently been rated as Good both by the external CQC visit last year and our organisation-wide internal review processes. Part of this rigorous assessment is to assess the quality of care and the support, leadership and training and development opportunities that the unit offers to staff. The unit is consistently achieving Outstanding for the compassion of care that staff provide there. The unit provides rehabilitation services for people requiring:

- Neurological rehabilitation
- Complex rehabilitation following a deterioration in functioning
- Disability management

We are looking for nurses who are kind and caring but also understand the importance of rehabilitation and working with patients to improve their independence. In return for everything you give you will receive, support, development, dedicated supervision and a first class learning experience of all aspects of rehabilitation nursing.

We operate 24 hours a day 7 days a week and you will be expected to work on a rota. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of doctors, therapists, social workers and health care assistants all focused on rehabilitating our patients to returning home where possible.

Working for our organisation

The St Pancras Rehabilitation Unit (SPRU) offers specialist rehabilitation service for patients living within North Central London catchment area. Key rehabilitation pathways include multi-pathology, frailty, stroke and neurology. The Nursing staff play an important role in delivering the ethos of a 24-hour rehabilitation and making every contact count. The SPRU nursing team work closely with the doctors, therapists, pharmacists and social care teams to deliver high quality, patient-centred rehabilitation programmes in partnership with the service users and their families.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As nurse’s we have to understand that no two days are the same, we will be faced with challenges, emergencies and problems and we have to be able to problem solve and adapt and keep the work flow moving.

As a nurse on the ward you are expected to work as part of the multi-disciplinary team. You need to be able to communicate and conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times.

We have a lot of resources available so need to use them.

It is your responsibility to teach and educate staff to the best of your ability, whether it’s sharing knowledge, experience or wisdom. Nursing is a profession where new concepts and evidence based practice are explored and this needs to be shared amongst the team.

The NMC plays an important role in safeguarding the public by regulating the work of nurses and all nurses, including Band 5 nurses, are expected to register with the NMC each year and adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct. As a band 5 you are expected to provide skilled, evidence based nursing care which adheres to agreed policies and procedures Working with patients and families in all stages of the care planning process including assessing risks and needs Acting as patient advocates in the multi-disciplinary team and overseeing the work of others to ensure that they are also responding to the needs of patients and providing clinically effective care Working as autonomous practitioners and taking responsibility for the care they give to patients but within their own limits of competency and confidence Contributing to creating and maintaining high performing teams by: communicating well with all members of the team understanding their role in the team and how they help the team achieve its’ objectives reflecting on their own practice regularly and encouraging the whole team to reflect on their practices in handovers and team meetings identifying how care could be improved As a Band 5 nurses you have to work in partnership with patients and their families and carers to ensure that the people using our services feel respected and empowered to make decisions about their health and wellbeing Gaining consent and, as far as possible, involving people in all decision making Signposting patients and carers to supportive services e.g. the courses provided by the Recovery and Wellbeing College or services provided by the local authority or the voluntary sector Reassuring people by being professional, responsive, knowledgeable and confident Responding to complaints or concerns effectively and quickly in line with the Trust policy
