Job summary

You'll play a pivotal role in merging two inspirational teams - a renowned arts psychotherapy team and a thriving psychology team - to create something truly extraordinary.

Secure Services in AWP has 10 in-patient wards, 7 in Medium Secure and 3 Low Secure, including a specialist Learning Disability and Autism ward and a Women's Service.

In addition, there are three community teams: the Specialist Community Forensic Team which supports service-users towards their discharge from Secure Services as well as for the first year post-discharge; the FIND team, which provides case management to service-users with LD&A; and the Forensic Personality Disorder Team, which provides case management to service-users with Personality Disorder.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will provide direct line management to psychologists and arts psychotherapists in the in-patient service, and provide professional leadership into those in the community is anticipated that the successful candidate will support the service through a process of understanding the commissioning contract and best practice guidance in this field, mapping this against the current offer and understanding the ways that the current service could use its resource to meet the service needs, developing a clear model of care for the service with key post sits in the Senior Leadership Team: a forum in which Heads of Profession and Lead nurses and the Senior Management Team work together to hold responsibility for the service and provide strategic leadership.

Secure Services is commissioned via the South West Provider Collaborative, which works in partnership with other providers of Secure Services within the South West region.

Due to current operational requirements and skill mix, at this time, we are seeking applicants with a forensic psychology background to compliment our current service as this role will have a clinical component.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. To provide specialist integrated clinical leadership and management of the Locality Psychological Therapies service. To manage capacity effectively to respond to demand placed upon the service. To act as part of the wider locality management team.

2. To provide professional leadership to all psychological professionals in a locality

3. To take the lead role in the redesign of Locality PTS services to support the delivery of the Divisional business plan.

4. To assist managers and clinicians to use the skills available within the Psychological Therapies Service to develop, evaluate and deliver a high quality and co-ordinated service to clients and their carers in the Area, in line with national and local commissioner expectations.

5. To participate in and provide specialist advice to relevant aspects of policy making, strategic planning, management and clinical governance in the locality.

6. To manage the delegated budget for Psychological Therapies Service in the Locality.

7. To undertake the role of a specialist clinician, carrying a specialist caseload of highly complex cases, providing advice and consultancy for patients and their carers, and specialist clinical supervision to professionals.

8. To lead and motivate practitioners, trainees and assistants from all professions within the Psychological Therapy Service.

9. To undertake highly specialist research both within and outside the Trust. To organise and supervise the R&D activities of others.

11. To work with the Head of Psychological Therapies/ Divisional Lead for Therapies and other senior managers to explore and pursue business opportunities consistent with the divisional business plan.

12. To work across systems/providers in the locality to ensure effective pathways for Service Users.

Because of the seniority of this post the post holder may be required to participate in on-call arrangements, after suitable training.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Doctorate Level training in Clinical/ Counselling Psychology or equivalent professional qualification for other professions. Registered with the HPC or other equivalent regulatory body. Advanced Specialist clinical qualification.

Desirable

Management training/ qualification.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential

Substantial relevant post qualification experience. Consultancy work in multi-professional settings Experience of work across service settings and agencies. Significant R&D work in specialist area. Clinical audit work in specialist area. Teaching/training with own staff group and other professions. Advanced expertise in clinical supervision with all grades of staff and with other professions. Management of psychology staff or other professions. Service development/ project work.

Desirable

Work with Commissioners, including preparation of bids/business cases. Leadership of service redesign.

Specialised Knowledge

Essential

Expert knowledge of specialist therapeutic interventions. Extensive experience with the client group. Expert psychological assessment and formulation skills. Expert complex assessments of own patients and also expert opinions to other agencies, including contested opinions. Awareness of key strategic areas and implications for psychological therapy services

Desirable

National profile in specialty. Role and links nationally (DoH, Academic links, senior role in national organisations).

Skills and Abilities

Essential

Excellent communication and inter-personal skills in highly complex situations. Excellent relational/ engagement skills with the client group who present severe and complex mental health problems. High level of emotional maturity. Ability to tolerate, reflect upon and transform highly traumatic material and hostile behaviour. Planning and writing business case documents skills. Flexible presentation skills appropriate to setting.
