The Trauma and Orthopaedic Department are looking to recruit a full time qualified Senior Plaster Technician. The successful candidate will have experience in all plastering techniques and possession of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) Casting Certificate for a minimum of five years. You will have a compassionate and caring personality, enjoy working with people and wanting to make a difference to the patients journey. This is an extremely busy department and the post holder will be expected to work in all areas of the Orthopaedic Department and Specialist Paediatric Clinic (Ponseti and serial casting).

The department also attends ED, Wards and Theatres as requested. Apart from general cast applications we also use the Focus Rigidity Casting (FRC), and Total Contact techniques, as well as, various forms of splint making and Orthotic applications.

Main duties of the job

To work as a Senior Plaster Technician within a team of technicians delivering a service to Trauma and Orthopaedics, A&E, UTC, Wards, Theatres and other departments across the Trust. The post holder will provide direct and indirect care at a high level for patients in the Fracture/Orthopaedic/Paediatric Clinics, Wards/Theatres and other areas of the Trust.

You will carry out duties deemed necessary to ensure a comprehensive provision of service. This is a varied role, requiring an organised approach, attention to detail and proficient in communication and administration work. A broad theoretical and practical knowledge base is required to deliver exceptional care to patients requiring application of casts, splints and bracing with a whilst undergoing treatment. This post offers a great opportunity to develop new skills, as well as, updating existing, full training and support will be given where needed.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will assist and coordinate the provision of a plaster room and out- patient service within the Bolton Hospital Foundation Trust

A comprehensive knowledge of anatomy physiology and medical terminology is essential to ensure accurate clinical assessment of both in and out patients as required. As such, the post holder must have completed the recognized British Orthopedic Association (BOA) casting certificate. In addition, have at least 3 years experience working at that level.

The post holder will be expected to work autonomously, using their knowledge and skills for the application of both simple, and complex prescribed casts splints and braces.

The applicant must have previous knowledge of:

Assessment and treatment of simple and complex wound management liaising with the treatment rooms and tissue viability teams within the trust and community

The post holder is, expected to carry out all relevant forms of care without direct supervision and will be required to demonstrate procedures for both adult and pediatric patients whilst acting as a resource within the specialty for both junior and medical staff

You must be able to demonstrate a high standard of casting and splinting techniques and provide technical support in collaboration with the trauma and orthopedic multi-disciplinary team (MDT).

The post holder must be able to work autonomously utilizing their knowledge and skills to advice on the most appropriate treatment (s) relevant to injury(s)

As this is a physically and mentally demanding role, the post holder must be able to work under pressure at busy times of the day
