Job summary

Our department is accredited with Quality Standard for Imaging (QSI) demonstrating our commitment to providing a high-quality service. The sonographer team undertakes a wide variety of examinations including abdominal, gynaecology, obstetrics, vascular, MSK and head & neck across three departments. Each specialism is led by a Specialist Advanced Practitioner Sonographer (Afc Band 8A) some of whom also perform interventional procedures.

You would be required to provide a high quality ultrasound service within your area of clinical competence working within the department protocols, seeking advice as and when necessary from Sonographer Clinical Leads and Consultant Radiologists. You will be accountable for your own professional actions.

With our recent appointment of a Consultant Sonographer, we now have a service which encompasses all levels of practice and roles outlined in the Sonographer Career Framework. Our vision is to further shape and develop our workforce providing increased opportunities for sonographers wanting to progress clinically and professionally for the benefit of our patients.

Main duties of the job

Undertake examinations in ultrasound, using established directorate and departmental guidelines, policies and procedures.

Select imaging modalities and techniques appropriate to the needs of the patient.

Compile a personal and professional portfolio in conjunction with the PDR process and undertake reflective practice.

Utilise the department CRIS and PACS system so as to maintain the electronic management of a patient throughout their time in the department and enter required data as specified in the department policy.

Have knowledge about and participate in the departmental Quality Assurance Programme and be involved in future developments.

Monitor the quality of own work and that of others in own area and alert manager to quality issues.

Be involved in the development and review of policies, protocols and guidelines in each designated area by cascading up-to-date knowledge learnt through the relevant professional bodies.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential

PgCert/PgDip/MSc in Medical Ultrasound from a CASE accredited ultrasound course or equivalent (via UK ENIC as required).

Desirable

HCPC registration or voluntary register.

Experience

Essential

Relevant clinical ultrasound experience and ultrasound equipment with a commitment to undertake ALL training requirements of the post. Demonstrate an ability to produce descriptive reports of findings and / or complete department report proformas in accordance with department guidelines and protocols. A commitment to expand and develop their core knowledge using evidence based practice and to work alongside other medical professionals to enhance their understanding of patient pathways

Desirable

Experience of working in an NHS setting. Post qualification ultrasound experience performing routine ultrasound examinations competently and independently Experience in specialised areas. Knowledge of, or interest in, clinical teaching

Personal Qualities

Essential

Flexible attitude to working hours. Ability to deal with competing priorities and to organise self and team members to deliver outputs to multiple deadlines. Excellent communicator. Ability to work flexible hours to meets the needs of the 7 day service. Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) and Work Related Upper Limb Disorder (WRULD).
