Applications are invited for

a fulltime locum consultant post in obstetrics and fetal medicine. The appointee will join a cohesive, friendly team of 38 consultants in obstetrics and gynaecology working across Bristol and Weston. 

The appointee will be an experienced obstetrician and will work with 21 other obstetricians and specialists within the department to provide a full elective and emergency obstetric service to secondary and tertiary level patients attending the hospital. Development of specialist areas of interest is encouraged and will be supported in the job plans. The appointee will work collaboratively within the department and within the fetal medicine multidisciplinary team to provide secondary and tertiary level care for the wide range of medical problems referred to St. Michael's Hospital as part of the University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust. 

The appointee will contribute fully to the obstetric workload of the department including delivery suite sessions and on call, and will take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate education. Experience in clinical leadership and a keen interest to acquire leadership roles in the department is hugely welcomed.

The timetable may be subject to change by mutual agreement with the Lead Doctor following job plan review. The post is based at St Michael’s Hospital.

Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria

Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) or eligible for specialist registration within six months of interview or Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or evidence of within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by date of interview ATSM or Subspecialty Training or equivalent in Fetal Medicine

Desirable criteria

ATSM in advanced labour ward practice ATSM in labour ward lead Higher degree (MD/PhD/MSc) or teaching qualification (postgraduate certificate or higher)

Experience

Essential criteria

A thorough and broad training in obstetrics and gynaecology To have completed the RCOG Core and curriculum and advanced training modules To be able to take responsibility for delivering the service without direct supervision To be able to respond quickly and efficiently to emergencies

Desirable criteria

Broad range of IT skills Experience in addressing health inequalities

Clinical Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria

Up to date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to specialty

Clinical Governance and Audit

Essential criteria

Involvement in clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies Led and completed service development or quality improvement project Experience of patient safety investigation Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation Demonstrates active involvement in evidence based practice Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme and, where relevant, evidence of participation

Desirable criteria

Contribution at national level to the field of patient safety and or quality improvement

Research

Essential criteria

Ability to increase the research profile of the Unit Demonstrable track record in research leading to publications in Medline indexed peer reviewed journals Must hold current GCP certificate

Teaching and Training

Essential criteria

Have experience organising and delivering undergraduate and postgraduate education programmes

Desirable criteria

Contribution at a national level to the field of medical education

Management & Leadership

Essential criteria

Ability to organise efficient and smooth running of a specialist service Ability to change/project manage Demonstration of knowledge of NHS management structures Ability to cope with and effectively organise the workload of a consultant Ability to take on responsibility and show evidence of leadership Ability to work under pressure and overcome setbacks

Desirable criteria

Hold a management qualification Elected role on regional or national committees

Interpersonal, communication and team working skills

Essential criteria
