Job summary

Applications are invited for doctors with suitable qualifications and experience to work as a full-time Specialty Registrar, within the Trauma and Orthopaedic department, at PRUH and South Sites.

Main duties of the job

The post holders will be expected to supervise the work of the JCF's and undertake regular ward rounds during the week along with the rest of the team. The general duties of the post include clinics (elective and fracture) and theatre lists (elective and trauma) plus on calls. There is a big emphasis on audit, research and teaching with numerous educational opportunities present in the department regularly. Participation in all these activities is encouraged and supported.

Post holders who show appropriate progression may be able to extend their contract and rotate through the department firms.

Job responsibilities

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Together with other colleagues to provide a service for patients. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group. Shared responsibility with other colleagues for providing 24 hours, 7 days a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness. Participation in Multi-disciplinary Meetings. Contribution to audit and clinical governance programmes. Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group management team. Contribute to the Care Group research interests in accordance with the Trusts R&D framework. Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from Deaths. Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s). Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues. Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.

The department provides an extensive Orthopaedic and Trauma service for the reception, assessment, examination and treatment of people with abnormalities of the muscular skeletal system or who have sustained a recent injury. Elective services are provided at our Orpington Hospital site. Trauma lists & Fracture clinics are run daily on our Princess Royal University Hospital site. This post provides experience in trauma as well as in general orthopaedics.

The post holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and wellbeing and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Medical Degree MRCS ATLS Full registration with GMC/GDC with License to Practice.

Desirable

AO principles of Fracture Management for Surgeons

Training and Experience

Essential

Completion of Basic Surgical Training or equivalent

Management and Leadership

Essential

Able to demonstrate leadership capability with Juniors.

Desirable

Familiar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes.

Audit & quality improvement

Essential

Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit and quality improvement. Must be able to demonstrate ability to lead change.

Research

Essential

Experience of conducting or supporting clinical research.

Desirable

Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of Trauma and Orthopaedics Publication of relevant review articles or case reports.

Personal Skills

Essential

Effective communicator, able to work in a close-knit team and co-operate with all medical and paramedical staff. Flexible and resilient.

Desirable

Familiarity with information technology and general computer skills.
