Main duties of the job

The Pharmacy Technician Higher Level will support the operational and strategic functions of the EPMA system within the Trust. This includes ensuring the accurate and efficient operation of digital prescribing and medicines administration, providing frontline support to healthcare staff, and troubleshooting technical issues. You will assist in system updates and enhancements, contributing to a seamless integration of digital solutions into clinical workflows.

You will engage in managerial tasks such as planning and improving EPMA services, and contributing to the forward planning of the Digital Medicines Team. Your role will also involve liaising with Trust-wide staff to support the development and optimisation of the EPMA system, and implementing audits to measure performance.

A key aspect of this position is involvement in digital transformation projects, including where you will utilise data to enhance patient safety and service efficiency. You will contribute to the development of medicines optimisation initiatives, using your expertise to identify and implement improvements.

Training is also a key component of this role. You will support the creation and delivery of Digital training packages and front line staff understanding of EPMA system.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Duties:

Support the day-to-day operation of the EPMA system, ensuring accurate and timely data entry and processing.

Provide frontline support to healthcare staff using the EPMA system, addressing technical issues and user queries promptly.

Assist in the configuration and testing of system updates and enhancements, ensuring minimal disruption to clinical workflows.

Managerial:

Participate in planning and enhancing the EPMA service.

Review service performance and arrange necessary modifications.

Contribute to recruitment and selection of new Technical and Assistant staff.

Engage in Digital Medicine Team forward planning.

Provide cover for other Higher Level Technicians as needed especially as part of the Clinical Service.

Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (EPMA):

Attain and maintain expert EPMA user status to enhance work practices, patient experience, and clinical governance.

Liaise with Pharmacy and Trust-wide staff to support EPMA system development.

Support the Lead Pharmacist and Specialist Technician for Digital Medicines in optimising the EPMA system.

Actively participate in the wider Digital Medicines Group, ensuring effective communication and collaboration across the Trust.

Develop and implement audits to measure EPMA system performance.

Address queries from healthcare professionals, escalating clinical issues to the Lead Pharmacist as needed.

Collaborate with the Pharmacy Computer Services Manager on matters related to system interfaces.

Develop policies and procedures to support safe EPMA governance.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

NVQ3 or BTEC in Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent. Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). Evidence of continuous professional development.

Desirable

Evidence of post-BTEC study in relevant technical subjects to Diploma / degree level or equivalent. Able to demonstrate detailed knowledge of legislation and current NHS standards relating to supply of medicines. Certificate of Accreditation as a checking technician.

Must be able to work methodically and demonstrate meticulous attention to detail. Ability to work flexibly, reliably, and deliver work within the specified time. Able to communicate well verbally with other healthcare professionals and patients some of whom may have barriers to understanding. Must be able to deal sensitively with all patients some of whom may be severely ill or distressed by their condition. Pleasant and helpful manner. Experience

Essential

Demonstrable experience in a hospital pharmacy setting, with a focus on electronic prescribing and medicines administration. Knowledge of relevant legislation, best practice and guidelines in medicines optimisation and patient safety Excellent IT skills particularly in the use of EPMA systems, MS Office Suite and electronic health records. Significant post qualification experience dispensing and checking prescriptions.

Desirable

Understanding of Digital Systems in particular EPMA systems, including configuration, maintenance, and user support Previous involvement in the implementation or optimisation of EPMA systems. Experience in conducting training sessions or workshops for healthcare staff. Proficiency in digital health technologies and their application to improving medicine pathways through an NHS Trust. How this applies to medicines optimisation and patient safety. Strong data management skills with an ability to analyse and interpret complex data to support decision making. Experience undertaking and reporting clinical projects, audits or Service Improvement initiatives.
