Main duties of the job

You will work as part of an Integrated Team across a range of paediatric specialities in the delivery of the occupational therapy aspect of the acute paediatric therapy service. This includes both inpatients, outpatients and supporting work in clinics.

Specialist assessment and treatment includes providing services on a variety of conditions including, but not limited to, children with orthopaedic, rheumatology or neurological conditions, developmental delay, post-surgical and oncology patients and non-organic presentations. Services include individual treatment sessions, as well as provision of assistive devices (splints) and equipment.

The post holder will use specialist skills to manage their own caseload, working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, without direct supervision. They will be confident undertaking all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner, developing and delivering individualised treatment plans and maintaining accurate patient records.

Supervision will take the form of formal training and clinical reasoning sessions, peer review and case conferences. Access to advice and support from a senior therapist is available if required, clinical work is not routinely evaluated. The post holder will provide leadership and supervision to less experienced staff, students, and non-qualified staff. They will also be expected to partake in evidence-based audit and research projects.

To use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patients and carers, including advice, instruction and teaching. To be able to motivate and facilitate children through specialist communication skills, play and handling. To advise, support and empower patients and their families/carers in self -management skills. To communicate assessment and treatment plans in the form of reports, letters and patient notes. To communicate highly sensitive information, effectively in a timely way. To work collaboratively with others to ensure the delivery of a coordinated multi-disciplinary service. This will include multi-disciplinary discussion of the childs care and progress and involvement in discharge planning. To communicate effectively with and work collaboratively with multiple medical, nursing and therapy staff in a range of settings including acute and community settings. To effectively share complex information with parents/carers and other professionals regarding a childs condition and treatment progress, in relation to therapy goals, whilst being sensitive and empathetic to their prior level of knowledge and understanding. Communication skills such as counselling, reassurance, persuasion, motivation explanation and negotiation will be used with a variety of patients. Barriers to effective interpretation will regularly be evident , use of interpreters, pain, anger, depression, frustration and or fear. To promote understanding of the aims of occupational therapy and intervention and to ensure consistency in the approach to patient care when dealing with patients, carers and other professionals. To represent the trust externally regarding occupational therapy services provided to patients. To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of work including the management of patients following national, local and occupational therapy policies. To be able to work as an autonomous practitioner within a team and as a lone worker. To have highly developed skills in the observation, handling and assessment of a patient and to interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical facts to assist in the formulation of accurate diagnoses and prognoses in a wide range of highly complex conditions and assist others to do likewise through teaching and training. To provide advanced, evidence based and specialist Occupational Therapy assessments of children presenting with a wide range of ages and diagnoses, considering physical, sensory, cognitive, perceptual, psychosocial, spiritual, social, environmental and cultural needs. To make recommendations and decisions regarding appropriate equipment to meet the needs of specific patients. To assess capacity, gain valid informed consent from child or carer and have the ability to work within a legal framework with patients/parents who lack capacity to consent treatment. To liaise closely with parents, care staff and other professionals involved with this patient group and manage the day to day running of the section. To organise and undertake responsibility for home and access visits with the subsequent verbal and written information that is required. To liaise closely with local teams regarding onward referral to community paediatric occupational therapy for those who require ongoing intervention. To maintain clinical professional development (CPD) by keeping informed of any new trends, which includes attending internal or external courses and incorporating them as necessary into the workplace (reflective evidence-based practise). To be responsible for maintaining own competency to practice through Continuing Professional Development activities, the local Trust staff appraisal scheme and agreed personal development plan. To actively maintain and develop the specialist skills required of a specialist paediatric occupational therapist by participating in reflective practice, attending in-service training, relevant national courses, clinical specialist groups, clinical supervision and peer review Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy Evidence of CPD including attendance at recent postgraduate courses/in-service trainings relevant to the clinical field HCPC Registration
