Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the theatre practitioner team at Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust as a Senior Theatre Practitioner (ODP/RN/RSCN).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a key member of the senior anaesthetic practitioner team, who work as part of the wider multi disciplinary team to provide elective and emergency surgical services to children & young people.

Attain relevant competencies and appropriate experience as a member of the hospital's resuscitation/trauma/acute/transfer teams, attending clinical emergencies as required including an advanced paediatric life support qualification (APLS/EPALS). Be solely responsible for the preparation of the anaesthetic room, general operating theatre area and specialist equipment therein. Ensure all equipment is in place to perform procedures according to individual needs of the child. Exercise responsibility for the effectiveness of anaesthetic and resuscitation equipment in the department and dispersed throughout the hospital in conjunction with a clinical leads. Attain relevant competencies and appropriate experience on the paediatric critical care unit, emergency department & other peripheral areas while working outside the theatre department exercising responsibility for planning and delivering patient care; the preparation, checking and use of equipment used. Attain relevant competencies and appropriate experience during the transfer of critically ill patients within the hospital and to other hospitals.

Job responsibilities

Communication

To maintain confidentiality of information regarding children/families at all times.

To communicate and liaise effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team, both verbally and in writing.

Provide and receive complex or sensitive information where there are barriers to understanding.

Promote and maintain good and effective communication with patients, relatives, and visitors.

Persuade patients and families to co-operate with treatment for their well-being, effectively deal with anxious relatives.

Ensure parents/carers and the child (when appropriate), have the opportunity to agree and/or negotiate care.

Communicate with a clinical lead or a member of the theatre management team regarding any problems, untoward occurrences or accidents out of hours through the hospital nursing bleep holder.

Organise own workload and equipment required for complex clinical procedures. May plan and organise colleagues work.

HR Responsibilities

Regularly manage one theatre for a span of duty, ensuring that a safe environment and high standards of care are maintained at all times.

Plan, organise and deploy staff according to competency and workload in order to meet patient needs for a span of duty for one theatre.

Act as preceptor and mentor for junior staff and students.

Risk Management

To be able to analyse and make decisions in relation to patient risk and care in complex cases, report to a clinical lead and instigate risk management processes in line with trust policy.

Service Development

To provide high quality patient care with continuous improvement in service delivery, audit and innovation.

To assist in setting the standards of patient care based on sound research findings.

To assist to develop, introduce and apply research based findings to nursing/ODP practice.

To assist in multidisciplinary audit projects within the clinical area.

To participate and assist in systematic monitoring and evaluation of perioperative practice within the department.

Work towards understanding the development and implementation of policy relating to the delivery of services for theatres.

Professional Accountability

To be aware of the resources available for continuing education and demonstrate a positive attitude towards self-development.

Identify own personal and professional needs through the appraisal and clinical supervision process.

To ensure that personal mandatory and statutory training requirements are met in accordance with Sheffield Childrens NHSFT policies.

Has delegated lead on some clinical issues eg health and safety, infection control, etc.

Be aware of and adhere to Trusts policies and procedures.

To undertake moderate physical effort on frequent occasions during a shift moving and handling patients, moving and handling supplies and equipment.

To respond quickly and effectively to the unpredictable workload of the department and the different levels of concentration required.

Frequently cope with the emotional demands of working directly with children and families involved in distressing situations unexpected illness/Injury, life limiting conditions, child protection and challenging behaviour.

Ability to cope with unexpected death, requiring to support bereaved families and other staff members.

To have daily direct exposure to blood and body fluids.

To work with pharmaceutical products in accordance with Trust policies and national legislation.

Could be exposed to verbal and/or physical aggression.

Direct Clinical Duties

To supervise planning and organisation of patient investigations, treatments on a day-to-day basis.

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care for children/young people and their families presenting for care within the framework of the team.

Undertake on call/ out-of-hours work as necessary to the service.

Undertake extended roles, after a period of training, supervision and assessment of competence.

Accurately complete patient records, using both paper and computerised systems.

Takes charge of one theatre for span of a shift without direct supervision (team leader).

Receive and identify patients and provide the final check of documentation particularly relating to consent and operation site before surgery.

To regularly move heavy loads including the transfer and positioning of patients and the movement of equipment.

Ensuring the correct care, labelling and despatch of laboratory specimens.

Exercise responsibility for maintenance and stock levels and the purchase of some physical assets including surgical equipment, anaesthetic equipment, disposables and major purchases in conjunction with clinical leads.

Participates in research procedures, including clinical trials and the evaluation of equipment and supplies when advised to by a clinical lead.

Attain relevant competencies and appropriate experience during anaesthetic procedures in peripheral areas away from the main theatre complex and at the Citys adult hospitals when a child is the patient.

Participating in bacteriological investigation in the operating department in conjunction with a microbiologist.

Work towards achieving competence in extended roles, through competency packages, where appropriate, to attain highly developed skills.

Participate in clinical supervision and training of junior qualified staff and students and the provision of specialist training on a range of subjects.
