Job overview

A rare opportunity has arisen for a 12 month secondment into the role of neonatal matron and provide clinical leadership to the neonatal unit, transitional care unit, neonatal outreach team and newborn hearing screening team. 

This provides opportunity for a senior nurse to gain experience of senior operational clinical leadership and to experience working as part of a triumvirate within the divisional leadership structure.

The role is to provide professional leadership, guidance, development and support for nurses and care staff ensuring the provision of excellent care with compassion. The Trust is one of just 2 units in Lancashire and South Cumbria that host a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and this offers opportunity to develop skills and work as part of a large team. The neonatal unit has been commended in 2024 as an "outstanding outlier" for an element of the National Neonatal Audit Programme. 

There are established leadership programmes and an opportunity to agree a bespoke development plan building on prior experience. 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To ensure the provision of excellent care with compassion the Matron is responsible for:

ensuring that the nursing and care support teams within their wards, departments and services are appropriately resourced and organised for the maximum benefit of patients. ensuring staff and services are adequately supported and developed to deliver excellent care with compassion in line with the Trust’s Values, Nursing & Midwifery Professional Framework, The 6 C’s, Safety and Quality Strategy, Governance framework, CQC standards, NICE guidance, other strategic local and national plans and policies. leading and developing staff by being a visible authoritative role model providing clinical and managerial leadership, support and direction, capitalising on research and development opportunities, supporting staff to reach their full potential Ensure clinical services are developed and delivered in line with national policy, Trust priorities, available evidence and patient care needs. Contributing to the delivery of the trust and directorate safety quality and clinical governance priorities and associated work programmes. ensuring the productive operation of their areas through the monitoring and maintenance of the highest standards of clinical care that create safe, clean and organised services ( including implementation of the infection control policy and action plans) and by developing processes designed to increase the time nurses spend in therapeutic contact with patients

Substantial and relevant post registration experience in neonatal nursing Significant experience of working in a senior nursing role including nursing management or team leadership Proven ability to flexibly manage manpower and other resources Able to demonstrate a personal contribution to the continuing professional development of staff Able to demonstrate a sound working knowledge of current issues within the NHS Knowledge of Clinical Governance and Safeguarding and the relevance of these to practice Experience of contributing to service developments and business planning Awareness of budgetary management and control Experience of managing and completing ‘performance management’ processes
