Job Summary:
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with students who have a range of SEMH needs, providing academic and emotional support in collaboration with classroom teachers and SEN staff. You will play a critical role in creating a positive, nurturing environment that helps students engage with their education, manage their behaviour, and develop social skills.

Key Responsibilities for SEMH Teaching Assistant:

  • Provide one-to-one and small group support to students with SEMH needs, focusing on their academic progress and emotional well-being.
  • Assist in developing and implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs) tailored to the specific needs of each student.
  • Help manage challenging behaviours using de-escalation techniques and positive behaviour support strategies.
  • Facilitate the personal and social development of students by offering targeted interventions and mentoring.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to modify lesson plans and activities, ensuring SEMH students can access the curriculum effectively.
  • Monitor and track student progress, providing feedback to staff, parents, and external professionals as required.
  • Support students in unstructured settings, such as during breaks and lunch, helping them navigate social interactions and manage their behaviour.
  • Work closely with external professionals such as educational psychologists, counsellors, and social workers to ensure a comprehensive approach to student care.
  • Participate in school-wide initiatives to promote emotional well-being and mental health awareness.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of student behaviour, interventions, and progress for use in multi-disciplinary meetings and safeguarding purposes.
  • Provide support during off-site activities and school trips to ensure the safety and inclusion of SEMH students.

Essential Requirements for SEMH Teaching Assistant:

  • Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs, either in a school, social care, or specialist setting.
  • Strong understanding of SEMH strategies and interventions, including behaviour management and emotional regulation techniques.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • A patient, calm, and empathetic approach, with the ability to stay composed in challenging situations.
  • Experience in implementing de-escalation techniques and managing behavioural crises.
  • A relevant qualification in Special Educational Needs (SEN), Childcare, Mental Health, or a related field is desirable (e.g. NVQ Level 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning, Mental Health First Aid).
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people, with the ability to identify and act on safeguarding concerns.
  • Willingness to undertake ongoing professional development to stay updated with best practices in SEMH support.
  • An Enhanced DBS check registered to the Update Service, or willingness to apply for one.
