London, United Kingdom Macfarlanes Full time

We are looking to hire a graduate analyst to join our valuation and corporate advisory team within the private capital solutions group.

About Macfarlanes

We are an independent London-based law firm with a global portfolio of high-profile clients. We are known for our high-quality work in corporate and commercial matters as well as advising our private wealth clients. We handle work of the highest quality and complexity on a wide range of matters.

Our size and partner-led approach enable us to give our clients a more personal service underpinned by the highest standards of commitment and care whilst our independence allows us to choose precisely the right lawyer / specialist or firm for our clients' needs in any jurisdiction in the world.

What this means for you

Offering a partner-led service enables our fee earners to learn and develop through working closely with a senior member of the team. Our size means that you will be in a client facing role, gaining a greater insight into the issues facing our clients.

We expect all our fee earners to assume real responsibility, as well as to participate in client and business development activities. That means wider exposure for you and a steep learning curve.

Our matters often have a cross-border element, so our fee earners frequently liaise with global businesses and specialists in overseas jurisdictions.

The importance we place on the development of our fee earners’ commercial skills has allowed us to develop the excellent reputation we have – we believe our education and training programme is second to none.

We all work together as part of a cohesive and supportive team, with the firm recognising, appreciating and rewarding the efforts of its employees.

Overview

The valuation team advises on valuations for various tax, accounting and commercial purposes, helping to ensure we deliver tailored valuations as part of a joined-up service within the firm. The valuation analyst will provide analytical, research and valuation support to the firm's clients, and be part of a core team for commercial negotiations.

We are a small but rapidly growing team comprising 6 individuals seeking to solve interesting and complex problems relating to valuations for a broad range of asset classes.

We also work closely with the Tax & Reward group which is rated as one of the leading tax advisory practices in the City. As with any tax practice in a City law firm, a proportion of our work is transaction based, supporting corporate, financing, real estate and investment fund transactions. However, a substantial and increasing part of our practice involves giving fee-standing tax advice to clients of the group.

The role

The individual will be required to carry out a broad range of valuation work, including assisting the wider practice when required. Key duties will include:

collecting financial and economic data using various databases and performing in-depth research and analysis of markets, industries and competitors; attending client meetings with the aim of gathering data and information pertinent to the engagement; using in house financial models as well as building bespoke models to perform valuation of various asset classes (such as equity, debt and derivatives). Examples of valuation techniques include discounted cash flow analysis, option pricing and market multiples approach; and preparing written reports and presentations and communicating analysis to our clients.

This job description encompasses the main duties of the role and is by no means exhaustive. It is anticipated that duties may vary from time to time according to the needs of the practice area.

The candidate

The successful candidate will meet the following criteria:

academic excellence, preferably a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics with a Master’s degree in Finance (or other related fields), graduating from a top business school; advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel (including VBA) is advantageous, but intermediate level is essential; excellent analytical skills, superior problem-solving ability, strong quantitative skills and attention to detail; eagerness to learn, take initiative and collaborate; strong communication skills (verbal and written) and ability to focus on most important issues; must be able to manage several projects under constant time pressure and prioritise accordingly; ability to work in a team with a diverse skill set; prior internship experience in finance and capital markets is not a pre-requisite, but an interest and awareness is desired; and good working knowledge with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to study for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) programme.

We take a flexible approach to recruitment and aim to recruit people that we believe show talent, motivation and potential. For the right candidate, this is an excellent opportunity to develop within a growing practice and undertake high quality work.

Application screening

Any offer of employment with us is subject to our pre-employment checks which are conducted by a third-party screening provider. These may include but are not limited to your professional and academic qualifications, any criminal records and employment references. These checks will be initiated with your consent and your offer will be subject to the successful completion of these checks.

Our commitment to inclusion

At Macfarlanes we believe that an inclusive, forward-thinking culture is both intrinsically important and enables us to provide innovative solutions to our clients. We have identified the continued development of inclusivity as a key priority and are committed to fostering a broad and diverse culture throughout the firm, from entry level to partnership. We continually review our processes to ensure that all of our people enjoy the same chance to develop and advance.

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, bringing different perspectives and experiences, making Macfarlanes an exciting and stimulating place to work. We seek to recruit the best candidates, regardless of gender, race or ethnicity, background, religion, physical abilities, sexual orientation or any other characteristic.

As part of our commitment to recruiting, retaining and developing a diverse workforce, we ask you and/or your recruiter to answer all the diversity questions when submitting an application to Macfarlanes. This data will allow us to measure our progress towards improving the diversity of our applicants, and ultimately, our hires.
