Job description

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated person to work within our Neighbourhoods Team primarily investigating complaints of nuisance and anti-social behaviour. You will also oversee the provision of financial assistance to improve housing.

About you:

You will have a relevant degree or experience for this role or be in the process of working towards a relevant qualification. You must be able to manage your own workload with minimal supervision, ensuring that you are working in compliance with the relevant guidance and legislation. You must have good communication skills and be empathetic to our customers, be friendly and open, and have the ability to deal with conflict in a calm, rational manner. A working knowledge and experience of the Housing Health and Safety Rating System would be useful, but not essential.

About the role:

Reporting to the Principal Environmental Health Officer, the primary function of this role is to investigate nuisance and anti-social behaviour complaints in line with statutory functions. You will be expected to provide advice, undertake visits, gather evidence, formulate responses and work towards successful resolutions, resorting to regulatory measures as appropriate. The person taking up the role would be expected to deal with cases from start to finish, with the assistance and mentorship of the Principal EHO. The ability to manage a caseload and show initiative is integral to this role, as is the ability to work as part of a small team, contributing toward the wider work of the Environmental Health and Community Safety service. In addition to regulatory activities, this role also involves the provision of financial assistance in the form of grants and loans for home improvements and adaptations. There is an element of flexible working, but it is expected that you will work from the office at least half of the week. You will also be required to undertake out of hours working as and when it is needed.

About the team:

The Neighbourhoods Team is a small team sitting in the wider Environmental Health and Community Safety Service which covers all aspects of Environmental Health, Licensing and Private Sector Housing. Covering the whole of Exeter, you will be allocated a district, but will be expected to provide cover and help other officers if necessary. You will also be working with other areas of the Council and other partnership agencies.
