An exciting secondment opportunity has arisen for an initial 4 month period as Head of Nursing for the Surgical division The position will provide strategic, clinical and managerial leadership for all nursing staff within the division providing operational direction to our teams, ensuring this reflects the changing needs of our patients, our stakeholders and the organisation.
Working closely with and reporting into the Divisional Director of Nursing (DDoN), the post holder will ensure the delivery of strategic and operational objectives set both by the division and Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHSFT. In addition, they will act as a point of contact for advice and expertise on all matters relating to professional nursing issues.
Working with the Divisional Triumvirate, namely the Director of Nursing, Director of Operations and Divisional Medical Director, the Head of Nursing is responsible for successfully developing patient services and new quality improvements within the divisional ward and departmental areas.
This vacancy is open to all internal candidates. Employees should ideally secure their manager’s agreement for a secondment arrangement ideally prior to applying, as this will be a condition of any offer made. This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term basis as it has been established to provide secondment cover for 4 months or when the substantive post holder returns. Whilst this post is advertised on an acting / secondment basis there is the potential that this post may become permanent in the future.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will contribute to Trust initiatives and plans particularly with respect to changes in patient care delivery and clinical quality. They will provide clinical leadership, which will inspire, motivate and empower our nursing teams. With a key focus on workforce, in conjunction with the Director of Nursing, the post holder will ensure through utilising safe staffing principles, high quality, safe and effective patient care is delivered and monitored.
The role will include:-
Deputise for the Divisional Director of Nursing
Provide line management for relevant staff including responsibility for designated matrons
Support the DDoN in improving standards across the division by facilitating the development of practice and strengthening leadership to ensure a quality patient focused service is delivered
Provide professional leadership and management to all accountable staff including recruitment, appraisal, continual professional development and disciplinary matters
Support the division in the provision of cross-site senior leadership and management visibility

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for the operational delivery of both the divisional and Trust Quality agendas, including risk management,clinical governance and quality improvement targets within nursing.
In conjunction with the Director of Nursing, and in collaboration with other members of the senior team, the post holder will be responsible for designated nursing budgets and will be accountable for effective management of resources. They will be expected to manage establishments within the budgeted resources, and the implementation of developments relating to nursing with a strict focus on managing financial stability. They will also focus and promote nurse led and multi professional research and audit.
