Clinical/Educational Psychologist or Psychological Practitioner – Beechwood College

Location: Barry Closes: 12/07/2024

This post offers an exciting opportunity for a Clinical/Educational Psychologist or Psychological Practitioner to work in Beechwood College, a specialist residential college for Autistic individuals .

This Band 7/8a role would be suitable for a new/recently qualified Clinical/Educational Psychologists or a Registered Clinician (e.g. Nurse, Speech and Language Therapist, Occupational Therapist) with further training in psychological therapies suitable for people with Autistic individuals.

The clinician will join a vibrant and established clinical team consisting of a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Behaviour Support Nurse, Assistant Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Dietician, Physiotherapist.

They will be part of this specialist multidisciplinary team delivering behaviour support and psychological therapy to both residential and day students at the college.

Behaviour support in Beechwood College consists predominantly of a Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) model and the post holder will continue our close links with the wider PBS community around Wales, having access to and the opportunity to engage with service and governmental levels of service provision and strategy alongside the Consultant Clinical Psychologist.

The therapeutic provision at Beechwood College follows the Autism frameworks and guidelines provided by the Welsh Government and NICE. This includes the need for creative adaptions to therapeutic provision that make this an exciting opportunity for a Clinical/Educational Psychologist or Psychological Practitioner to develop their therapeutic skills. We have implemented some novel and well planned adaptions to traditional therapeutic strategies, including adaptions to CBT, ACT, Narrative Therapy, Compassion Focussed Therapy, and others. An evidence based and model adherent approach is taken to all of our psychological provisions.

We are constantly looking to improve our therapeutic resources and regularly look to coproduce revisions of the materials with students.

Systemically supporting staff teams and engaging with carers and family members is also an important role with this team. We lean towards the theoretical ideas found within DDP and attachment focussed literature, including DDP and the House Model. Training staff in these trauma informed ways of working can really help the development of relationally secure environments that then allow the students to more easily deal with college life and learning. We need a clinician with an interest and skills in working alongside and supporting MDT staff.

The service is focussed on cultures of care , and we believe in empowering our students, promoting the development of skills and celebration of strengths while we help the student reach their academic and personal goals within the least restrictive environment possible.

The post holder will have the opportunity to work under the supervision of a Consultant Clinical Psychologist to provide comprehensive assessment and intervention. They will also have an opportunity to develop their own supervision skills , as appropriate, with Assistant Psychologists and/or Trainee placements.

Our organisation places a strong emphasis and value on psychological services and will invest in your ongoing development. You will be part of a large clinical services department across our group with access to clinical and forensic psychologist and AHP colleagues. Research and networking interests are supported and encouraged. We have good links with local clinical training courses and academic centres: the postholder will be encouraged to supervise trainee Clinical/Educational Psychologists or other trainee clinicians on placement.

We invite applicants with experience of working with service users with complex needs and challenging behaviours along with those who have an interest and prior experience of delivering evidenced based interventions for Autistic individuals.

Salary: Band 7/8a equivalent based on experience. We are happy to discuss flexible, term time and part time working for interested candidates.
