NNL is looking for a high calibre, motivated and experienced individual to manage the Human Factors capability at NNL. The individual will manage the Human Factors capability which is responsible for integrating and applying Human Factors methods in a safety critical environment, advising and supporting the design and safety assessment process in support of all NNL’s laboratories active operations. The individual will have experience and a track record of successfully managing technical leadership and delivery of projects of a team, who work as part of a team to deliver safety-based solutions and have the confidence to promote Human Factors best practice.

The capability is part of the Nuclear Operations within NNL which delivers critical programmes of work across both NNL’s civil and defence portfolios and holds critical skills for the Nuclear Sector. The Capability Manager is required to work closely with NNL internal and external customers, including EDF, MoD /RR, Sellafield Ltd and NDA, and support key strategic areas in line with NNLs strategic purpose.

To manage the Human Factors capability successfully the suitable candidate must:

Be able to demonstrate effective management of people, focussing on their welfare, nurturing their behavioural competencies as well as supporting the development of their technical capabilities. Ensures clear line of sight of all safety responsibility and the availability of resource to support delivery. Maintain a strong work relationship with the customer and all touchpoints throughout the organisation.

Main Responsibilities for Capability Manager:

EHSS&Q Accountabilities:

The Capability Manager (CM) will be accountable for EHSS&Q within their team:

Duty of care for all staff identified. Delivery of projects, programs and technical work. Delivery of the EHSS&Q Assurance and Improvement Plans.

Capability Accountabilities:

The CM will be accountable for all resources within their team:

Staff: Leadership, performance, SQEP, development, technical training, progression and recruitment.

Budget Control Accountabilities:

The CM will support the Capability Leader for all budgetary control associated with their team and will be measured against budget control through KPI’s:

Staff costs including, recruitment, training, progression, T&S. Reward and Recognition.

Customer Delivery Accountabilities:
The CM will be accountable for all customer delivery associated with their team:

Work with Account Directors and Customer Workstream Leads to engage with customer to maximise all business opportunities. Technical excellence in customer delivery. Technical resolution.

Leadership Accountabilities:
The CM will be accountable for cultural and business strategies associated with their team:

Development of the team in line with business requirements and recognising technical advancements. Quality of science and customer delivery. People performance, development and cultural change.

Essential Criteria for Capability Manager:

Demonstratable Line management experience in a team applying Human Factors methods in a safety critical environment, advising and supporting the design and safety assessment process in support of nuclear active operations. Excellent level of knowledge in the field of Human Factors and extensive experience in integrating and applying Human Factors methods, preferably in a safety critical environment. Experience in team management across multi-nuclear sites with complex programs of work. Degree qualified or equivalent level of demonstrable technical capability. Experience of EHSS&Q compliance and assurance and implementing continuous improvement Successful business development and project delivery. Budgeting and achievement of financial targets. Experience of operating in an active laboratory and associated safety and security requirements. Proven ability to act independently, under own initiative, while supervising other members of the team. Strong communication skills, including remote working. Excellent teamworking skills, with ability to inspire the work of a team. Valid UK Driving License. Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years’ worth of UK residency).

Desirable Criteria For Capability Manager:

Experienced in mentoring and developing technical skills. Preferably Chartered Membership of a professional institution. Excellent networking skills, maintaining network across the Human Factors field nationally. You might have membership of relevant national industry group(s).
