Role Overview:

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting students with special educational needs (SEN) to ensure they receive the best possible educational experience. Your primary responsibilities will include:

Student Support:

  • Provide tailored support to students with SEN, addressing their individual learning and emotional needs.
  • Assist students in understanding and completing academic tasks.
  • Offer emotional and behavioural support, fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Classroom Assistance:

  • Support the classroom teacher in delivering lessons and managing the classroom.
  • Help prepare learning materials and resources for differentiated instruction.
  • Monitor and record student progress, providing feedback to the teacher and the SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator).

Individual and Group Interventions:

  • Implement individual education plans (IEPs) and support strategies for students with SEN.
  • Lead small group or one-on-one sessions to reinforce learning objectives.
  • Adapt learning activities to meet the needs and abilities of individual students.

Behaviour Management:

  • Promote positive behaviour and support the school's behaviour policies.
  • Manage challenging behaviour effectively, using appropriate strategies to de-escalate situations.
  • Encourage students to develop social skills and build positive relationships with peers.

Collaboration:

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, the SENCO, and other staff to ensure a consistent and supportive approach to student learning and development.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and carers, providing updates on student progress and addressing any concerns.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.

Requirements:

  • Experience working with students with special educational needs, either in a school setting or through relevant voluntary work.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine commitment to supporting the learning and development of students with SEN.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • A proactive and flexible approach, with the ability to adapt to the dynamic needs of the school environment.
  • Relevant qualifications in education or SEN support are desirable but not essential.
