Working with patients and colleagues both internally and externally, the role of the National Institute of Health and Care Research Lancashire Clinical Research Nurse (NIHR LCRF) Research Nurse is to provide clinical expertise and leadership in the set up and delivery of early phase clinical trials.

The NIHR Lancashire CRF is one of only 28 dedicated facilities within England funded to deliver innovative, early phase (phase I/II) experimental medicine clinical trials and the only centre in Lancashire and South Cumbria. Working with Lancashire Teaching Hospitals; Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust; Lancaster University; University of Central Lancashire and other CRFs we have a strong portfolio of trials in our priority areas of Cancer, Neurosciences (including dementia) and Mental Health. The NIHR LCRF Research Nurse is fundamental to the development and delivery of this portfolio.

Training is essential to ensure patients are safe when part of an early phase clinical trials. The LCRF provides a comprehensive training programme to all staff to make sure all our patients are cared for safely and to the highest standards. We learn from other CRFs nationally to ensure all team members have access to a thorough package of training and development so they can expertly deliver the innovative clinical trials.

Main duties of the job

The role of the NIHR Lancashire CRF (LCRF) Research Nurse is to set-up, deliver clinical trials, in a variety of disease areas, and support, and be an advocate, for patients that are part of these trials. Following a strict protocol this involves carrying out a variety of clinical procedures, collecting clinical data and inputting this into various electronic systems.


Working with colleagues within the LCRF team, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Lancashire and South Cumbria NHD Foundation Trust and external organisation the LCRF research nurse will provide strong leadership to implement Good Clinical Practice (GCP) to all aspects of trial set-up and delivery. They will need to have strong communication skills, both verbally and written, to ensure patients are cared for to the highest of standards and for the effective set-up and delivery of LCRF clinical trials. Communicating with a variety of experts internally and externally is a key element of the role. 

The role will require evening, night, and weekend work to support the growing LCRF portfolio of early phase clinical trials. 

Training is a key to the delivery of these complex trials. The role requires staff to actively participate in all aspects of training and disseminate key information to colleagues and students. The role requires active engagement with students on placement within the facility to showcase the importance of research in patient care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To support the Lancashire Clinical Research Facility Manager and LCRF Senior Sister in ensuring the provision of excellent care with compassion for the patients, relatives and visitors who are cared for within the LCRF, clinical departments, services or teams. Ensure a high standard of nursing is delivered by self and others based on assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care to meet patients’ needs in accordance with agreed local and National standards and evidence based guidelines. Assist and support the LCRF Manager and Senior Sister in the safe, effective management of the area including management of personnel, facilities and the associated systems and processes  Act as a role model, presenting a positive image of self, team and the organisation.  Be responsible for the delivery and co-ordination of care, through appropriate professional practice, delegation and supervision of duties carried out by junior staff Set, monitor and maintain standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care.  Proactively manage risk and maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines.  Communicate all relevant information to the multidisciplinary team internally and with external organisations as required, to ensure seamless care Promote provision of patient education and health promotion Promote equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals Ensures environment of care is safe, well equipped and compliant with standards for hygiene and cleanliness. To participate in education and training of junior staff Maintain and develop own professional competence and seek to extend the scope of personal knowledge and skills within scope of role and professional practice Facilitate the delivery of highly specialised clinical trials in coordination with the principal investigators and departments in different disease areas of research.

Experience of CTIMP trials Evidence of leadership experience and learning Awareness of recent advances within Nursing practice Knowledge of Clinical Governance and safeguarding and the relevance to practice Knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of a clinical research nurse Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures Experience of implementing changes to benefit patients and improve nursing practice Knowledge of Ethical issues
