Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a hard working and enthusiastic dietitian to join our friendly team. If you are looking for your first dietetic role or wishing to consolidate you general dietetic skills then this could be the post for you.

If you are eligible for HCPC registration but do not have this yet we will consider your application.

The role is based within our acute dietetic team at the Great Western Hospital and the successful candidate would join our band 5 acute rotation programme, which consists of rotations Cardiology & Respiratory, and Surgery.

There will be opportunities to be involved in project and audit work as well as providing teaching /training sessions for patients and other health care professionals.

Our team consists of 25 Dietitians and a trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner, 2 Nutrition Nurses, 4 Dietetic Assistants, and an excellent admin team.

Main duties of the job

As a department we have monthly CPD sessions, and there are opportunities to shadow colleagues in other specialties including ICU, oncology, parenteral nutrition, home enteral feeding & diabetes.

We have good access to CPD funding for training and have a number of staff participating in masters modules related to their area of work.

All newly qualified staff are enrolled into the trust-wide preceptorship program.

We have good computer facilities in the department and have access to excellent library and CPD support.

We have a good track record of being able to provide internal promotion for staff.

The department provides placements for A, B & C students and you will be involved in elements of their training and supervision.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To provide effective dietetic treatment for a delegated caseload of in-patients and out-patients at the Great Western Hospital with support and training provided by senior dietitians to ensure appropriate professional conduct and development.

To undertake and develop the dietetic service for a number of general medical and surgical in-patient wards

To be responsible for managing appropriate patients referred from ward areas, using local protocols

To be responsible for patients fed enterally within own caseload, including periods of cover. To calculate patient requirements and ensure these are met by recommending specialised products and the appropriate administration of these via naso-gastric or gastrostomy tubes.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Degree or post graduate diploma in Dietetics Registration by the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) Member of British Dietetic Association CPD relevant to elements of post acute adult nutrition support

Desirable

Member of relevant BDA special interest group ( PEN Group ) Audit and/or clinical research Behaviour change techniques Student Supervisory Skills training

Experience

Essential

Recent relevant clinical dietetic experience (such as student placement or band 5 role) Recent experience of working within a relevant team Recent experience of working with 'MUST' (or similar) Recent experience of working with adults requiring nutrition support

Desirable

Recent experience of working with vulnerable people or children Recent experience of carrying out projects or activities with transferable skills working as a carer Experience of using behavioural change techniques Experience of clinical audit/ clinical research

Skills

Essential
