We are looking for a Technical Lead to join our Economist Group engineering team. Your primary focus will be to design, develop, ship, maintain and oversee the overall architecture of our Economist Impact estate. The Technical Lead is responsible for leading the team that creates and architects The Economist Impact websites, maintaining and improving existing features on existing applications, and working with The Economist Product team to develop innovative solutions that meet growing consumer needs.

You should enjoy working with autonomy in a creative and entrepreneurial environment, and have a strong commitment to producing high quality solutions. We offer flexible working and have recently shifted to a 'remote first' working policy with a minimum expectation of coming to the office two days a month, however you can come in more often if you wish to.

Accountabilities

How you will contribute:

Provide leadership and oversight to distributed teams of web full stack engineers. Drive productivity through engineering fundamentals and industry best practices. Play a crucial role in interfacing with business stakeholders to define solutions & requirements, prioritise, and drive execution using agile methodologies.  Drive the technical direction of the web platform and its integration with other services with reusability, testability, maintainability principles. Hire top engineering talent, provide mentoring, coaching and guidance to your staff to nurture and grow talent. Create an engineering culture of creativity and innovation. Collaborate with business and technology stakeholders to deliver high quality products and services that meet business requirements and exceed expectations while applying the latest available tools and technology. Effectively communicate status, issues, and risks in a precise and timely manner.

Experience, skills and professional attributes

What you’ll need to be successful

Background in technical fields, software engineering, computer science or relevant industry experience. 10 plus years of software industry work experience with at least 3 plus years of people & team management experience. Proven track record in managing engineering teams, developing & deploying web apps with large scale adoption & usage. Experience in modern web frameworks, web design, development & deployment. Experience creating apps that distribute rich media such as video and audio, interactive web platform (D3, WebGL) Proven track record to recruit, grow & retain top talent Ability to collaborate in a globally distributed environment. Strong analytical, problem solving and communication/articulation skills. Strong business acumen, ability to grasp the big picture and explain to the team in simple terms. Previous experience with highly available, global operations digital product companies experience is a big plus. Experience collaborating with and supporting engineering-led teams and able to help leverage the value of platform based solutions to accelerate outcomes.  Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to work well with a wide range of stakeholders. Strong ownership, scrappy and biassed for action.
