An exciting opportunity has arisen in General Surgery. Chiltington ward are looking for a dynamic and motivated deputy ward sister/charge nurse with experience in General Surgery.

The role of the post holder is to support the ward manager, and in their absence ensure the effective management of Chiltington ward at Worthing Hospital. In addition the post holder will provide clinical and professional leadership within this area, ensuring an effective, quality service with responsibility for patient safety and standards of care. To practice and act in accordance with NMC code of conduct and University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust policies and procedures.

Main duties of the job

Provide high quality leadership for the nursing team and support the ward manager to ensure quality and safety is prioritised in the clinical area . Supporting staff and patient experience. 

Provide high quality evidence based clinical care to patients, in line with the Trust Values and in accordance with professional regulations.

Work with others to protect and promote the health and wellbeing of those in your care, their families and carers, and the wider community.

To act as a role model communicating in line with the Trust Values, to patients, carers and the staff at all times.

Accept delegated responsibility for specific activities recognising and working within the limits of your competence.

Take every opportunity to continue to maintain and develop your own practice.

Facilitate students and others to develop their competence through 
supervision, teaching and role modelling.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide leadership to and work as part of a team ensuring effective communication with all health care professionals within the clinical team and across all disciplines.

Act as a role model within the clinical area.

Adhere to the Trust values in all working relationships to patients, carers and staff .Teach/assess and facilitate learning for all learners in the ward area, particularly students and healthcare assistance.

Demonstrate good leadership skills and ensure that communication is effective between the patient, relatives and members of the multidisciplinary team, and ensure appropriate nursing input into patient care discussions.

Ensure communication is used effectively in the interests of patient care, including the use of handover and clinical incident reporting if necessary.

Demonstrate politeness, courtesy and sensitivity in dealing with 
patients/clients, visitors/relatives and colleagues, maintaining good customer relations and recognising individuality and rights for each patient in line with Trust Values.

Work effectively within a multi-racial and cultural environment.
Service Delivery and Improvement.

Participate in the setting of standards for nursing practice and for care involving the multidisciplinary team.

Understand local audit processes and take opportunities to initiate local audit and participate in Trust audits locally.

To maintain stock control and order specialist supplies within current resources.

To be forward looking and promptly intervene to ensure safe staffing levels and appropriate skill mix and escalate to manager any staffing issues or other resource issues which may impact on staff or patient care and safety.

To keep updated with current research/evidence relevant to patient care, treatments and service developments.
