Reactor Plant Performance Engineer

Full Time

Derby, site-based

Why Rolls-Royce?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Reactor Plant Performance Engineer to join our Submarines business in Derby.

In this role, you will be analysing reactor performance for existing and new designs under normal, abnormal and accident scenarios and developing a broad understanding of reactor plant operation and protection systems.

Our Submarines business is responsible for the design, manufacture, supply and through-life support of nuclear propulsion-related products and systems in support of the Royal Navy's submarine fleet. You can find out more about the amazing projects that we are working on here:-

We’re a leader in propulsion system design and development for the Royal Navy’s nuclear submarine fleet and the sole provider and technical authority.

Join us and we’ll provide an environment where you can be yourself. An inclusive, digital-first culture that invests in you, gives you a platform for continuous learning, and access to an incredible breadth and depth of opportunities to grow your career.

This is an outstanding opportunity to work at the forefront of reactor plant performance analysis.

We offer excellent development, a competitive salary and exceptional benefits. These include bonus, employee support assistance and employee discounts.

Due to the sensitive nature of our work, this role will be based permanently at our offices in Derby. There is an opportunity for occasional business travel to our waterfront locations in Plymouth, Faslane and Barrow-In-Furness to support the Tests & Trials section.

What you will be doing:

You will carry out out fluid flow and heat transfer analysis to support robust design evaluation of the Nuclear Steam Raising Plant. You will also:

Use a combination of commercial and in-house developed codes and methods, to assess primary systems and their components to determine the consequences of a variety of normal operation and accident scenarios.

Define the pressure and temperature transient profiles for the life of the submarine on existing and future plant designs.

Perform development, verification and validation of models used in the analysis of the nuclear plant.

Who we’re looking for:

At Rolls-Royce we embrace agility, are bold, pursue collaboration and seek simplicity in everything we do. These principles form our values and behaviours and are an essential component of our assessment process and are fundamental qualities that we seek for all roles. And to be successful in this role, you will need to:

Be qualified to degree level or equivalent in STEM-related subjects, ideally with thermo-fluids experience.

Have a good understanding of fundamental engineering principles and processes and a solid understanding of the principles of fluid dynamics and heat transfer.

Be able to provide clear, concise and accurate technical requirements in written and verbal form.

Have excellent communication skills and be highly driven, striving to maintain excellent delivery performance.

Experience of simulating reactor coolant systems using industry-standard codes (such as RELAP5-3D, COBRA, TRACE, NLOOP ) is desirable, but not mandatory.

We’re an equal opportunities employer. We’re committed to developing a diverse workforce and an inclusive working environment. We believe that people from different backgrounds and cultures give us different perspectives. And the more perspectives we have, the more successful we’ll be. By building a culture of respect and appreciation, we give everyone who works here the opportunity to realise their full potential.

You can learn more about our global inclusion strategy at

To work for Rolls-Royce Submarines you need to hold a Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats to that clearance. Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if you don’t currently already have this in place.

Due to the nature of work the business conducts and the protection of certain assets, you must hold a UK nationality . Any dual nationals will require additional scrutiny and background checks prior to commencing work with RRSL.
