Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join a team of 7 cardiac (including this post) and 4 thoracic surgeons based at The James Cook University Hospital. It is advertised on a whole time (10 PA basis), although any candidate who is unable to work full time will be eligible to apply and if appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed in consultation with consultant colleagues and the Medical Director.
Main duties of the job
The Consultant will share in the provision of in and out patient cardiac surgical services at The James Cook University Hospital. There is a good range of complex cardiac surgery delivered - minimal access valve and CABG surgery, aortic surgery, mitral surgery and off pump surgery.
There is a requirement for research within the post and this will be included in the indicative job plan. Subject to the academic credentials of the successful applicant it is expected they would be offered an honorary senior clinical lecturer position at Newcastle University, and to develop and lead a programme of research. The new colleague will also be welcome to develop in any clinical aspect of the programme in conjunction with the team.
The Consultant will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his or her charge and for the proper functioning of the department in conjunction with the other Consultants.

One of Europe's most modern hospitals, The James Cook University site is the largest of its type and has a wide range of specialities. This hospital was opened in October 2003 and has a capacity of over 1000 beds. Based on the original site of South Cleveland Hospital, all acute and elective medical and surgical specialties are accommodated. Tertiary services, in addition to cardiology and cardiac surgery, include renal medicine/haemodialysis, neurosurgery, vascular surgery and the regional spinal injuries unit.
This site contains a modern central operating suite containing 22 well-equipped theatres, with two recovery areas. This is immediately adjacent to an Adult Surgical Day Unit containing a further three theatres and also to the Paediatric Day Unit. The 16 bedded general ICU is across the corridor. Two additional theatres for gynaecology and obstetrics are in the Central Delivery Suite and two more in the Ophthalmology Day Unit.
