Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic, and organised Pharmacy Technician with an interest in medicines safety and controlled drug (CD) governance to join our Pharmacy Medicines Safety, Optimisation and Governance Team at LUHFT.

This postholder will work within the pharmacy medicines safety team with an emphasis on controlled drug (CD) management, supporting the lead and senior Medicines Safety Technician in key aspects of the work programme to improve compliance with CD and medicines storage standards.

Medicines safety and improvement is our priority. We are looking for a committed technician with excellent communication skills to work within multidisciplinary teams, providing specialist advice and guidance to improve the management of medicines in pharmacy and across the Trust.

Experience and knowledge working as a registered pharmacy technician in a hospital pharmacy are key for this post to support delivery of the best quality and safest care to patients.

Main duties of the job

Support the safe management of CDs across the Trust by undertaking proactive monitoring of CDs, resolving CD balance discrepancies and helping to co-ordinate and data collect the pharmacy CD audits. Support the Pharmacy incident management processes by collating data, undertaking analysis producing reports, and presenting data in a variety of ways. Contribute to medicines incident investigations including formulating, delivery and follow up on action plans. Deliver shared learning from incidents by contributing to safety newsletters and providing education and training to the multidisciplinary teams. Take part in the dispensary and ward based pharmacy services on asessional basis, supervising junior technical staff.

Job responsibilities

Key Duties - Medicines Safety

Collect, input and analyse medicines incident data to identify themes and trends and prepare reports including recommendations. Support the reporting of near misses medicines-related incidents across the organisation. Contribute to the review of pharmacy medicines safety incidents. Utilise tools and techniques to ensure systems review is undertaken andinvestigation and response are in line with the Patient Safety IncidentResponse Framework. Support the development and delivery of systems for sharing lessonsand learning from incidents. Support the medicines safety leads in recording, monitoring and feeding back on medicines risks. Undertake investigations involving CD balance discrepancies ensuringmisappropriation documentation and escalation pathways are followed. Support the proactive monitoring of CD use across the Trust utilisingdiversion dashboards and investigating any areas of concern highlighted. Assist with the design, co-ordination and completion of medicine safety, medicines management and CD audits, the input and analysis of data and the production and implementation of action plans. Provide supervision and support to staff undertaking the CD audits and assist with CD discrepancies they identify. Assist in writing and reviewing relevant departmental and organisationalpolicies and procedures. Support actions in response to NHS England alerts and notices andensure that responses are provided in a timely manner. Assist with updates to Trust medicines management training content. Interact with a range of colleagues to fulfil the responsibilities of the post including healthcare professionals across the multidisciplinary team.
