Great that you're thinking about a career with BSI

Job Title: Electro-Mechanical Design Engineer

Location : Loughborough

Job Type : Permanent, Full-Time

About the Role:

Our Design Engineers play a pivotal role in BSI's Product Certification business, specifically within the Energy Practice in Loughborough. The position is responsible for conceiving, designing, and delivering customized testing rigs, ensuring compliance with a variety of industry standards.

As a Design Engineer, you will contribute significantly to the success of our product certification services by advancing our testing capabilities and ensuring the safety and quality of energy-related products. This role would suit a Control systems / Mechatronics Engineer familiar with the design & build of bespoke equipment.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

Design and Development: Create innovative testing rig designs that meet the unique requirements of our internal clients, ensuring adherence to relevant industry standards and regulations. The successful candidate will focus primarily on design and build of control elements, however, they will need to be capable of designing automated testing equipment in its entirety.

Testing and Validation: Lead the construction and commissioning of testing rigs, conducting FAT & SAT tests to assess rig performance and safety. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure rigorous testing processes.

Standards Compliance: Stay up to date with industry standards and regulations, applying this knowledge to guide the design and testing processes. Our test laboratories are required to test to established Standards, therefore the ability to interpret complex standards and ensure that testing rigs align with these requirements will be fundamental to success.

Documentation: Prepare and maintain comprehensive documentation, including Mechanical, Electrical & Control Schematics, reports, and design specifications, to demonstrate compliance with certification requirements.

Collaboration: Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, scientists, and project managers, to meet project objectives and deliver high-quality testing solutions. Projects that are outsourced will require the Development Engineer to support the Project Manager in the pre-purchase validation.

Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to enhance testing processes, methodologies, and equipment to increase efficiency and accuracy.

Health and Safety: Adhere to safety protocols and best practices while working with testing equipment, ensuring a safe working environment for all team members.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Engineering Principles: Possess a deep understanding of core engineering principles, including mechanical, electrical & control systems.

Design: Proficiency in design methodologies, including conceptualization, prototyping, and design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA).

Materials and Manufacturing Processes: Knowledge of various materials, their properties, and the manufacturing processes relevant to the industry, including machining, moulding, casting, and additive manufacturing.

CAD Software: Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software, such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar tools, for 2D and 3D modelling.

Simulation and Analysis: Familiarity with simulation and analysis tools (e.g., FEA, CFD) to assess design performance, structural integrity, and thermal characteristics.

Standards and Regulations : Stay updated on industry-specific standards and regulations governing machine design and development.

Project Management: Understanding of project management methodologies and tools to effectively plan, execute, and monitor engineering projects.

Cost Analysis: Ability to conduct cost analyses and consider cost implications in the design and development process.

Emerging Technologies: Awareness of emerging technologies and trends in engineering design, such as IoT, AI, or sustainable design practices.

Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills, capable of identifying issues, analysing root causes, and implementing effective solutions.
