A new position for a Consultant Respiratory Physician with specialist interest in Asthma and Severe Asthma has arisen at Barts Health NHS Trust. In north central and north east London, severe asthma care is provided through a Hub-and Spoke network (North Central and East London Severe Asthma Service) of which St Bartholomew's Hospital as the commissioned centre is the Hub. We provide expert coordinated care for patients in the region with difficult to control asthma, with detailed patient assessments leading to targeted specialist therapies to improve asthma control for our patients. We have a large MDT including 3 existing Consultants, 4 specialist nurses, 2 pharmacists, a speech & language therapist, ENT surgeon, dietician, physiotherapist and psychologist.

As a Hub-and-Spoke network committed to joining up asthma care at tertiary, secondary, and primary care level, all Severe Asthma Consultants within the Service combine clinical activities in severe asthma with general asthma & general medicine clinical activities at a Spoke. This post is at St Bartholomew's Hospital (8PAs) and Newham University Hospital (2PAs) with the post-holder part of teams at both sites.

Clinical activities at St Bartholomew's Hospital encompass outpatient and inpatient care of patients with Difficult and Severe Asthma. Clinical activities at Newham Hospital include the local asthma clinic and local departmental meeting.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity to join one of London's 'Hub' severe asthma services as part of the Barts Health NHS Trust Networked Respiratory team, looking after complex patients across East London and beyond.

This is a new position for a Consultant Respiratory Physician with specialist interest in Asthma and Severe Asthma and the post holder will become an integral member of the multidisciplinary team. They will primarily be working at St Bartholomew's Hospital in the City of London with both inpatients and outpatients, and providing outpatient specialist care and MDT support at Newham University Hospital. There will also a commitment to inpatient sessions in general respiratory care at the Royal London or Newham University Hospital for candidates with the appropriate experience.

Job description
Job responsibilities

(DCC) Outpatient clinics, virtual reviews, multi-disciplinary meetings and inpatient ward rounds of Difficult and Severe Asthma patients at St Bartholomew's Hospital, working with the multi-disciplinary team. Face-to-face Difficult Asthma clinics are typically 2 New and 7 Follow-Up patients and virtual Difficult Asthma clinics 7 Follow-Up patients. Difficult Asthma inpatient workload is up to 4 patients. Urgent clinical reviews would typically be expected to take 15-30 minutes depending on complexity and necessary discussion with multi-disciplinary colleagues.

(DCC) Outpatient clinics in general Asthma and respiratory medicine at Newham University Hospital. General Asthma clinics are typically 4 New and 8 Follow-Up patients. Many of the clinics are done from Shrewsbury Road Health Centre about 10 minutes drive from the Hospital. There is on site phlebotomy and radiology (for CXRs). The clinic nurses are able to demonstrate inhaler technique and peak flow monitoring.

(SPA) To provide clinical leadership in management of acute asthma admissions across the Trust, including contributing to guideline development, training of multi-disciplinary colleagues, leadership/supervision of NACAP (Asthma) audit returns and development of links with primary care across local CCGs.

(SPA) To assist the Lead for the Severe Asthma Service in supervision and professional appointments within the Severe Asthma Service.
