Job summary

To lead the development, pilot and evaluation of a new approach to supporting families facing bereavement before, during and after the death of a loved one in hospital. To directly support families affected by bereavement and connect them with services in-house and locally to support them through registration, funeral planning and their bereavement journey. To involve volunteers in supporting the dying patient and approaches to supporting families to connect with bereavement support local to them. To support the Trust in staying connected with the bereavement sector locally and nationally, promoting best practice and cascading knowledge, skills and approaches to bereavement in the acute hospital sector. To evaluate and clearly evidence the quality and impact of a recommended Bereavement Support Service and bereavement pathway using Better Together quality improvement approaches.

Main duties of the job

To influence the development of patient and family centred Bereavement Support principles and approach across the Better Together Partnership. To benchmark, scope and develop a Bereavement Support pathway and pilot service in line with legislation and best practice for bereavement services within healthcare settings. To co-ordinate integration and collaboration of hospital and community-based volunteering in support of the dying patient and KHFT bereavement support offer. To build productive relationships with internal and external bereavement support providers and stakeholders, convening a multi-disciplinary Bereavement Support Steering Group to oversee, constructively challenge and support the development of the Bereavement Support offer for KHFT and its principles across Better Together. To develop a smooth transition for bereaved families and individuals from an in-hospital bereavement support service into the local community (working across the 5 boroughs), connecting with the network of expertise across the local pastoral, faith and belief, cultural, voluntary and professional sectors in the bereavement field. To ensure that all bereavement support and resulting offer is culturally sensitive, adhering to local and national ED&I legislation and responsive to the pastoral, spiritual, cultural, faith and belief needs of patients, families and across our diverse local communities.

About us

Working as a solo practitioner, you will work closely with ward teams, the current Bereavement Service, PALS, and colleagues working across End of Life Care. This is a role which requires strong collaborative working skills and a commitment to using quality improvement methodology. We embrace learning by doing. This role draws on a EOLC Steering Group in order to tap into a vast amount of clinical, pastoral and programme management experience to support the post-holder, integrate the role with existing ways of working and embrace a quality improvement approach to improving the experience of bereavement at Kingston Hospital.
