Are you a qualified solicitor or barrister who has experience of providing legal advice in a regulatory environment?

We are looking for a Triage Lawyer to join our Assessment and Early Resolution (AERT) team in either our Birmingham or Cardiff office.

The role

We receive thousands of reports every year raising allegations of misconduct and regulatory breaches against those we regulate.

As a Triage Lawyer, you will provide high quality legal and regulatory advice to our assessment team (known as Assessment and Early Resolution Team or “AERT”). This team conducts an initial assessment of every report we receive and carries out initial inquiries before deciding whether a formal investigation is required or not. In the role you will oversee the assessment of the more complex reports that the team receive and, where appropriate, you will work with senior colleagues to escalate high profile matters with your recommended next steps.

As well as having conduct of your own case holding, you will provide general case direction and deal with technical queries across AERT and conduct quality assurance for the team.

You will need to demonstrate a good understanding of the solicitors’ regulatory environment as you will be involved in identifying and taking appropriate steps to manage complex, sensitive or high-profile matters in an outcomes-focused and risk-based way. You will advise on and where required make formal decisions that are evidence-led and in accordance with the SRA’s Assessment Threshold Test.

You will work in AERT and report to the Legal and Enforcement department.

What’s in it for me

To work in a fast paced environment, making important threshold decisions on investigations and supporting colleagues to do likewise. To oversee the work of complex investigations and to help drive those forward by providing practical legal advice to Investigation Officers. To hold a complex case holding comprising high profile matters.  To support colleagues in their professional development by providing quality assurance, timely feedback, support and training.  To expand and develop your legal regulatory experience. To join a supportive and friendly team with a renowned regulator offering a competitive package with a good work-life balance.

What we are looking for

An ability to acquire and apply extensive knowledge of law and regulation of legal services. A pro-active approach to cases and projects Experience of conducting quality assurance checks and/or delivering training. Track record of leading and delivering solutions, taking accountability for the successful resolution of very complex issues Experience of mentoring and coaching other professionals. Good understanding of regulatory and operational risk.
