Job summary

Perinatal mental health services are undergoing a time of huge expansion nationally. Locally this has led to the development of a comprehensive perinatal mental health service for South Birmingham during Wave 1 of national funding. Wave 2 of this nationally funding has led to the creation of comprehensive services covering the Black Country and West Birmingham and the North & East Birmingham and Solihull.

An important aspect of this post will be supporting the continued development of this new community team. Dr Berrisford is responsible for five inpatient unit beds and is the clinical lead for the perinatal service as a whole, the other 5 inpatient beds and West Birmingham CMHT are covered by Dr Brownsett - Dr Brownsett will cease working for West Birmingham as she takes over the care for all beds for the MBU during Dr Berrisford's sabbatical period, Dr Jankovic provides perinatal mental health care at Birmingham Women's Hospital and also has an academic appointment. Dr Ahmed and Dr Sultana provides perinatal care at Heart of England Foundation Trust.

We are seeking to recruit a substantive consultant psychiatrist who will provide perinatal psychiatric care to the North and East Birmingham area for 8 PAs per week.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will provide perinatal psychiatric care to the East Birmingham area.

The postholder and the other consultant for East Birmingham will provide reciprocal cover for the community team during the working week, as well as for the inpatient MBU.

A considerable amount of multi-agency work is envisaged with the post-holder working with relevant key agencies including Child Protection teams, Health Visiting Services and Public Health colleagues from the Local Authorities, close working with professionals at UHB, primary care - including IAPT workers, GPs and Children's Centres, and collaboration with the voluntary sector. Training and advice for linked agencies will be an important role of the postholder.

Full GMC registration with a licence to practice Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act (1983) MRCPsych or equivalent Obtained inclusion on the Specialist Register; or within six months of the award of a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in General Adult Psychiatry; or eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register Commitment to personal programme of Continuing Professional Development. Experience within the field of perinatal psychiatry at senior trainee level Substantial experience of psychiatry, including working with people suffering from severe mental illness, preferably in a community setting, Out Patient, In Patient and general hospital liaison settings. Experience of providing psychological and/or social interventions Experience of teaching and training at an undergraduate/postgraduate level Commitment to clinical audit within multi-disciplinary team. Ability to critically appraise published research Understanding of policies and National guide-lines relating to Perinatal psychiatry, maternal and Child health, including CEMACH, NICE, SIGN and relevant NHS and RCPsych publications Ability to understand and contribute to the current evidence-base Experience of carrying out audit projects Evidence of potential for effective leadership. Excellent communication skills. Ability to work creatively within multidisciplinary team. Additional qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or another relevant field Broad clinical training including both inpatient and community service Specific training in relation to perinatal psychiatry Experience serving a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic population Experience of stakeholder engagement in service delivery Experience of contributing to or completion of a service improvement project Experience of work with patient-support groups relevant to perinatal psychiatry Experience of supervised training in aspects of psychotherapy either through completion of post-graduate courses and/or a series of supervised cases Above level 3 Child Safeguarding training.
