About the role

Balfour Beatty are recruiting for a Senior Cable Design Engineer to join the Power Transmission and Distribution team.

We are open to both full time and part time candidates (including job share), and offer a flexible working policy.

You will perform and lead the design delivery for Cabling Projects up to 400kV, from tendering to project handover.

What you'll be doing

Act as the Cabling Lead Designer as appointed by the Design Delivery Manager. Responsible for delivery of the tender deliverables and projects Cabling scope of works and coordination of the relevant resources. Identify and ensure design compliance with all relevant standards, legislation, Customer requirements and contract specifications throughout the project lifecycle. Review tender or contract documentation and establish the scope of works. Apply best practices and lessons learned on all tenders and designs. Design optimized cable routes in line with client/stakeholder specifications and ground conditions Work to carry out TR, density; void ratio etc. testing on sand, sand/ gravel and CBS samples for cabling contracts across the company. Help to develop Cable System Engineering Dept (CSED)s test processes and procedures to ensure continuity and efficiency. Calculate cable conductor size and type and perform cable rating calculations in line with IEC60287 Perform hydraulic cable calculations for oil filled cable system Prepare complete cable system design technical documentation including, but not limited to, Current Rating Reports, Material Schedules (BOQ), System Design Summary, Risk Register and Installation Methodology Report. Produce cable pulling tensions calculations to prove cable routes and designs are achievable. Design and mark-up drawings including, but not limited to, Sheath Bonding Line Diagrams, Cable Trench Cross Sections, Detailed Route Layout, Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Plans, Cable Termination GAs, Cable Sealing End Compound Layouts & Elevations. Draw up design briefs for civil and structural design works, and advise the relevant loads from the cable system that must be taken into account in the C & S design works. Work to guide site teams, by conducting site visits as necessary, to determine and approve routes and setups to install all types of HV cables. This will include identifying hazards, risks, easements, cable installation parameters etc. Use AutoCAD, cabling software packages to develop and assess cable installation scenarios and verify existing designs where applicable Ensure all required designs, models and drawings have an adequate level of review, checking and approval, including suppliers and subcontractors, according to Quality Assurance processes and in line with Right First Time. Collaborate with designers from other disciplines under coordination of each projects Engineering Manager. Practice Safety, Constructability and Sustainability by Design on all projects, ensuring compliance with the H&SAWA and latest CDM Regulations. Maintain an up to date risk register, with particular emphasis on the identification of risks and hazards at the design stage and where possible providing mitigation at the design stage (zero by design). Prepare the priced Schedule of Deliverables for the Cabling scope of tenders, together with the associated Risk Register and list of Assumptions. Collaborate with the Planner and Engineering Manager in the production of the tender programme. Support and work on the resolution of design challenges in collaboration with the site operations team, client and other disciplines, as required. Deliver the allocated scope of works to programme, budget and quality. Interface with other stakeholders as required for project delivery. Ensure Document Management procedures are followed at all times. Supports improvements works within the team and projects. Work alongside innovations team to help develop and introduce cutting edge technologies into projects Trains, mentors and coaches more junior colleagues and supervises their work.

Who we're looking for

A Degree/HND/HNC in Electrical, Mechanical or Civil Engineering (Power Systems Electrical preferred). Previous experience with consultancy, contractor or utility in the Power industry. Experience in the design of complete HVAC (essential) and HVDC cable systems (ideally). Experience in managing and leading HV cable designs at all stages of a project Understanding of industry HV cable installation standards and specifications. Ability to take the initiative, demonstrate a pro-active approach to activities, problems and one self. Understanding of cable installation types, their requirements and installation parameters i.e. flexible or rigid arrangements, minimum bending radii etc. Ability to manage the various inter-departmental design interfaces (i.e. structural design, planning, electrical design, drawing office) efficiently and effectively to deliver complex designs solutions. Ability to both write and understand technical documents relating to all aspects of cabling and HV cable systems Good understanding of risks associated with cabling works. Recently completed CDM training with specific focus on a designers perspective. Ability to complete Risk Assessments for designs being developed and produced. Ability to prioritise workloads in a proactive and organised fashion (using software tools as necessary) to ensure key deadlines are met and reliant parties are kept informed.

Desirable

BESC, NG Persons and Confined Space trained preferred. Experience in the use of CYMCAP to support cable system design, or alternative current rating software. Understanding or awareness of TMF forces and their impact on cable support structures and system design Knowledge of oil filled cables and ability to carry out hydraulic assessments to verify existing designs or modify as necessary. Understanding of Temporary works, the supporting engineering, BB specific temporary works procedures, solutions, risks, hazards etc. Understanding of sustainability and environmental requirements and expectations within the industry Understand busbar loadings and their impact on termination support steelwork Proven track record of working with clients and customers to deliver projects, on time and on budget.
