Inverness, United Kingdom NHS Highland Full time

This is an exciting time to join the expanding, friendly and dynamic team of Ophthalmologists based at the new National Treatment Centre – Highland (NTC-H), whilst also providing a comprehensive visiting Ophthalmic Service to the Western Isles or Orkney.

The NTC-H building is purpose-built and hosts the entire adult Eye Care Service, including operating theatres on the ground floor. Elective orthopaedic surgery is carried out on the 1st floor. There is a 24 bedded Ward on the 1st floor with operating capacity for the Orthopaedic Service. There are 2.4 Orthopaedic theatres for elective hip and knee joint replacement surgery and 2.6 Operating theatres for Ophthalmology. One of the Ophthalmology theatres is used for elective hand and foot surgery two days per week.

The NTC-H is sited on the beautiful Inverness Campus. Due to the unique proximity, there are significant opportunities to build on current research, education, and innovation links with the UHI and other key stakeholders.

We are looking for a Consultant Ophthalmologist with general ophthalmology skills with an optional special interest to complement the existing clinical team. You must be exceptional as both a clinician and a team player. You must be able to evidence continuous service improvement and commitment to developing a multi-disciplinary team approach.

The successful candidate will join a team of 9 other Consultants; 1 Associate Specialist; 2 Speciality doctors, 3 Specialty Trainees, 1 Glaucoma fellow; 7 Orthoptists and 4 Hospital Optometrists. Current subspecialty interests provided by the department include Vitreoretina, Oculoplastics, Glaucoma, Uveitis, Paediatrics, Neuro-ophthalmology, Strabismus, Cornea and Medical Retina. Workload is sufficient to allow duplication in some areas of specialist interest.

The successful candidate will also be expected to continue a General Ophthalmology interest, along with visits to the Western Isles or Orkney to conduct peripheral clinics and operating theatre sessions. The department also provides a visiting service to Caithness and Fort William, and depending on departmental job planning agreement, visits to these clinics could also be included if service demand requires additional resource in these locations. The appointee will participate in the 1:7 8am-8pm on-call rota. The post also offers the opportunity for a certain amount of both Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching.

This substantive post is available on a ten programmed activity basis (8 DCC: 2 SPA). However, applications for part time and/or flexible working will be actively considered.

Prospective candidates will require to be on the GMC Specialist Register and will hold a CCT or CESR (Article 14 – Certificate of Equivalency) or be within 6 months of obtaining the certificate. Consideration will be given to candidates with equivalent experience who wish to pursue a CESR application.

In April 2023, the department relocated to a purpose-built, National Treatment Centre-Highland on the Inverness Campus. Transformation and planning opportunities are key to delivering ‘state of the art’ management of ocular conditions, with an emphasis on new imaging technology allowing for remote and virtual working.

The Western Isles are situated around 45 miles off the northwest coast of Scotland and are reached by a direct 35-minute flight from Inverness Airport. The islands have a population of around 27,000 are renowned for their pristine sandy beaches and beautiful dramatic landscapes.

The population of Orkney is 22,000 and is a 45 minute flight away from Inverness Airport but you can also take the ferry from Gill’s Bay Ferry Terminal in Caithness.
