Job Introduction

An exciting opportunity is available for a Primary Network Design (PND) Engineer in the South West area based in Bristol. The successful candidate will work within the PND team who are responsible for undertaking power system analysis and the network design associated with both new connections and reinforcement of the 132kV, 66kV and 33kV distribution network throughout National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED).

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual who can join us in developing our outputs to meet the ED2 business plan targets including the need to ensure capacity is available for new connections, technology and changing demand patterns.

*Please note the successful candidate may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

Main responsibilities

The PND engineers in the team are responsible for various aspects of network design including:

Earthing and PQ: The design of earthing systems including the provision of technical support to the local network services teams. Leading on the assessment and monitoring of power quality across the 132kV and EHV network including the provision of technical support to the local network services teams. Management of G5 headroom Provide PQ and earthing cover and support to the other PND teams during periods of absence, or as required. Support the roll out and installation of fixed and mobile PQ boxes to the NGED network. Assist with power quality customer complaints and attend site to investigate or gather information Review of customer and independent connection provider (ICP) earthing designs and PQ compliance assessments. Represent the Company on specialist groups or national working groups, as required. Undertake other PND activities when required. Other core PND engineer responsibilities: Assessment and design of new demand and generation connections. Preparation of connection offers, budget estimates and feasibility studies. Liaison with customers and the management of customer connections to ensure timely, safe and on budget delivery. Assessment of the 132kV and EHV network for compliance with our distribution licence and associated engineering recommendations for new connection enquiries. Design of network reinforcement schemes and production of capital sanctions. Liaison with other departments within NGED such as the DSO, Major Projects, Engineering Design, Telecoms, Policy and Wayleaves. Design and support the roll out and implementation of active network management (ANM) on NGED’s network. Coordination and review of customer and independent connection provider (ICP) designs and compliance assessments including G99 Provision of support to Network Services on design issues such as generator connections and major replacement schemes. Collaboration with National Grid transmission owner and operator (NGET and NGESO) covering the development of new connections, grid supply points and third party work assessments. Represent the Company on specialist groups or national working groups, as required.

Ideal candidate

It is expected that the successful candidate will focus on the power quality (PQ) and earthing responsibilities of the role and therefore would benefit from additional expertise and experience in these fields.

You should be self-motivated, take ownership and personal responsibility for your workload, and demonstrate a clear knowledge of the principles and issues associated with earthing design and power quality. Some EHV and 132kV network design experience would also be advantageous.

The ability to present information in a clear and reasoned way, together with an open yet analytical approach to problem solving, and good computer skills are essential to the role. A familiarity with network analysis tools such as PSSE or IPSA would be an advantage. An Electrical engineering degree or equivalent qualification is desirable.

Whilst your base will be in NGED’s offices in Bristol, you will be required attend site, when necessary, to undertake your duties. As such, you will be required to travel throughout the South West region and a full UK driving licence is essential. There may also be times where travel to other NGED licence areas may be required.
