Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified occupational therapist to join our well-established wheelchair team, based in the Mobility Centre on the City Campus.

The wheelchair service provides wheelchairs to adults and children in the South Nottinghamshire area currently, both on a short term and permanent basis. The team consists of a Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist, Specialist Occupational Therapists, as well as excellent, well-experienced administration and rehabilitation engineer staff, all of whom the post-holder will be expected to work with. The team works in various clinical settings - including the Mobility Centre, schools, patient homes etc., as well as supporting occupational therapy staff in ward settings as required.

As a band 5, there is access to continuous professional development and preceptorship for newly qualified staff. NUH is committed to personal and professional development for all staff. We provide regular supervision and training for your own development in this role, so that you can reach your full potential. Additionally, you will be able to access support from the therapies practice development team.

Main duties of the job

To assess the clinical condition of the patient and how this affects their life and need for a wheelchair, considering activities of daily living and how these will be enhanced by the provision of a wheelchair

To liaise closely and communicate clearly with patients, their carers and multi-professional teams within the organisation and with other agencies and providers, signposting as appropriate

To undertake appropriate visits in the community which may include home, work, school, nursery, residential, or nursing home, day centre training establishments, etc. These visits will be undertaken in line with the appropriate Wheelchair Service procedures

To have an understanding of tissue viability and the importance of providing the most suitable pressure relief for the user

To have an understanding of the importance of good posture when seated in a wheelchair

To work in conjunction with rehabilitation engineers and technical staff where required

Therapies and Rehabilitation Services is one of the pathways that together make up the Clinical Support Division at NUH. We are a diverse pathway of AHPs and support staff, employing over 600 staff who work together to deliver the high quality care we aspire to. Our HCPC registered AHP professionals comprise of physiotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, orthotists, prosthetists and speech and language therapists, and our other staff encompass professionals such as nurses, psychologists, administrative and clerical and support workers. We have a Chief AHP to lead us on our strategic direction, and many of the pathway leadership team have pathway AHP backgrounds to support our staff. There are also Practice Development Therapists to support career development for all.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

To work in line with the occupational therapy service core purpose.

To comply with clinical minimum standards and criteria set within the occupational therapy service.

To work only within the area of competence agreed in liaison with the respective supervisor and to seek training, help and/or guidance on all other occasions.

To maintain and update personal knowledge, taking responsibility for evidencing continuing personal development (CPD) as required by the Health Care professions Council (HCPC).

All staff working under the title of "occupational therapist" must maintain registration as a member of the HCPC and subscribe to membership of the British Association of Occupational Therapists.

To demonstrate professional behaviour at all times in accordance with the College of Occupational Therapists Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct (2005) and the College of Occupational Therapists series "Professional Standards for Occupational Therapy Practice" (2003).

To comply with both legal requirements and the occupational therapy guidelines on documentation and confidentiality.

To comply with all Trust policies, procedures and guidelines.

To comply with all occupational therapy service procedures, guidelines and protocols.

To participate actively in the Personal Development Review (PDR) process, whether as an appraiser or an appraisee using the Trusts PDR documentation.

Support the training of occupational therapy students on practice placement as agreed with the named practice placement educator for a named student.

To maintain appropriate statistical returns as required.

To maintain a high standard of housekeeping within the occupational therapy service, the main departments and satellite areas.

To undertake any other duties that may be reasonably required.
