We are pleased to be able to advertise a full-time Band 6 post for a forward thinking and creative Occupational Therapist within MentalHealth Services for Older People.

You will be based within our City Teams, based at Merlyn Vaz Health & Social Centre and at the Bennion Centre on the Glenfield Hospital site. You will be working alongside another Band 6 Occupational Therapist, our Band 5 Occupational Therapist and our Occupational Therapy Assistants. Some work in other areas of our service may be required according to service needs.

Mental Health Services for Older People (MHSOP) has Occupational Therapists working within The Memory Service, In-Patients on designated Organic and Functional Mental Health Wards, within Community Mental Health Teams throughout Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, the In-Reach Team a specialist service providing support to patients with Mental Health conditions in Community Hospitals and Care-Homes and our Primary Care Mental Health Integrated Care Team.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be working not only as part of a supportive Multi-Disciplinary Team but a wider Occupational Therapy Team too, the Occupational Therapy Service offers opportunities for induction and in-service training, holds a monthly Peer Support Group and a MHSOP Occupational Therapy Service-wide Professional Development Forum. We are committed to evidence based practice and use the MOHO Framework to inform assessment and intervention.

The post holder will be responsible for own practice and accountable for all aspects of the Occupational Therapy (OT) process (info gathering, assessment, treatment planning, intervention, evaluation and discharge planning) as appropriate to patient needs. Whilst assisting team/clinical/operational leaders in the organisation and co-ordination of the service provided.

You will be working with patients in their own homes to promote their independence, maintain skills and reduce the impact of occupational deprivation, our patient group will often have co-existing physical and mental health conditions, making our work varied and at times challenging, but above all extremely rewarding.

Qualifications

Essential

Degree or Diploma in Occupational Therapy. Registration with the Health Care Professionals Council. Additional specialist postgraduate training relevant to clinical area.

Experience

Essential

Ability to take a lead and work in partnership with other members of the multidisciplinary team in the delivery of Therapy Services in Clinical Care Pathways. Demonstrate confidence in own abilities relevant to post and experience. Ability to reflect and critically appraise own and others performance. Ability to identify, provide and promote support to patients and carers. Ability to identify, provide and promote support to all members of the Therapy Service.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

Understanding of the role of the Occupational Therapist in the specialist area and the treatment interventions available. Experience of working as an Occupational Therapist in relevant area or has transferable skills. Demonstrate sound understanding of the principles of Clinical Governance, its application and risk. Knowledge of relevant legislation/issues impacting upon services. Knowledge/understanding and skills in demonstrating the OT process. Understanding of Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics. Experience of research/audit/quality improvement. Experience of supervising Junior Staff, Students and/or Support Staff. Evidence of and commitment to continuing professional development.

Personal Attributes

Essential

Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to use own initiative to provide information and support to other staff. Ability to work autonomously to prioritise own workload and delegating where appropriate. Experience of teaching/passing on skills in formal and informal environments. Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Mobility

Essential

The candidate must be able to use their own transport or a suitable alternative for the purpose of this post. Dependence on public transport is not suitable for domiciliary roles.
