This is a well-established joint post between Bath University and NBT which is equally split between both roles. The post holder will be responsible for developing, delivering, and assessing practice-based learning at an undergraduate level and be part of the Pre-Op Surgery pharmacy team providing a clinical service to the specialty.
This joint appointment will involve working collaboratively with other practice educators to design, deliver and assess practice based learning elements of the pharmacy undergraduate degree course including our very successful Clinical Learning in Practice (CLIP) model. The successful individual would be required to cover a range of face to face teaching activities and elements of assessment. There is also a requirement to provide pastoral support to individual students.
Whilst working within the hospital you will be part of the Pre-Op surgery team, providing cover to the clinic on a sessional basis and supporting the clinical management of surgical patients at NBT.
The role has a major focus on teaching and potential candidates must therefore have excellent presentation and communication skills, have completed a clinical diploma, and be able to work both at the University in Bath and Southmead hospital in Bristol.
Main duties of the job
Design and deliver high quality teaching which is informed by significant professional experience gained via practice, research/study and teaching experience, to undergraduate students on the new MPharm programme - to include lectures, workshops, applied pharmacy practice skills sessions and supervision of dissertations or projects, assessment and marking and pastoral care of students, in line with Department and University policy. Primarily the teaching commitment associated with this role will be in the practice out a significant role in the design, development and delivery of practice-based learning in the department of pharmacy and pharmacology.Contribute effectively to University wide developments and innovation in the design and delivery of teaching. This may include participation in professional accreditation activities where necessary. Whilst it is essential that teaching is informed by research/professional expertise there is no research component in this role.Responsible for the efficient and effective provision, management, and development of the appropriate clinical pharmacy service in accordance with Medicines legislation, the Code of Ethics of the GPhC, RPS hospital pharmacy standards, UKMI standards and Trust policies and procedures.Provides specialist clinical pharmacy services at a high level to the Pre-Op pharmacy Surgical Team. Teaches and supervises less experienced colleagues, pharmacists, technicians, and students.

Practice Educator Role
Deliver high quality teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students which is informed by significant professional expertise gained via practice, research/study and extensive teaching experience. Includes designing units of study and their assessment regimes, identifying learning objectives and teaching methods, developing materials and resources, including materials for use online, communicating subject matter clearly and encouraging debate. Provide appropriate responses to student interventions during teaching, responding to questions within and outside class times and react pro-actively and positively to changes in course content or delivery. Specific undergraduate teaching in the new MPharm will include: Design and delivery of the experiential hospital visits in MPharm 1 Design and delivery of the Clinical Learning in Practice (CLIP) teaching in MPharm 1-4 Support for Practice Placements throughout the new MPharm Design, implement and evaluate teaching and learning packages, participate in the development and modernisation of the curriculum, taking a lead in parts of this activity Design, implement and evaluate assessment tools and criteria for courses, mark assessments, ensuring adequate moderation, providing written or oral feedback as appropriate. Mark final assessments as required Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate level student projects as required Engage pro-actively in on-going professional development both in own subject and in teaching and learning. Act as mentor for more junior teaching fellows or casual teaching staff. May include involvement in professional or teaching and learning networks within and outside the University Take a lead role in programme evaluation, including facilitating student feedback, reflecting on own teaching design and delivery and implementing ideas for improving own performance Carry out teaching related management and leadership duties within the Department or Faculty/School undertake another significant activity to contribute to the overall strategic management/direction of the department as allocated by the Director of Practice Based Learning. Take lead on innovations which have impact at the level of the Department or Faculty. May be asked to represent the teaching interests of the Department at Faculty or University level meetings Take a pastoral role for students when students are away from campus during practice based learning activities. Maintain a knowledge and awareness of student support services and be able to identify student behaviour which is of concern or where support is needed and refer students on appropriately for assistance as necessary Carry out teaching-related management duties or other duties within the grade as allocated by the Director of Teaching or Director of Practice Based Learning Contribute to outreach and/or Widening Participation activity within the Department, Faculty/School or UniversityPre-Op Surgery Pharmacist
Responsible for the provision, management and development of a highly specialist pharmaceutical service to the Anaesthetics, Surgery, Critical Care and Renal (ASCR) Division to achieve a high standard of efficiency and effectiveness. Responsible for the provision, management and development of a highly specialist pharmaceutical service to the Pre-Operative Assessment Clinics and managing the pharmaceutical care in the per and peri-operative period. Clinically screen prescriptions to ensure the safe, efficient, evidence-based and rational use of medicines in line with the BNSSG Formulary and departmental policies so that risks to patients are minimised. Contribute to the overall development of the clinical pharmacy service through active participation in relevant meetings. Work closely with all members of the pharmacy department and other healthcare professionals. Attend consultant and ward board rounds whenever possible to provide pharmaceutical expertise Demonstrate strong leadership skills across all elements of the role Provide reports on the use and cost of medicines to the surgical division as appropriate and analyse these to advise on strategies to ensure cost-effective use of resources. Write relevant protocols, procedures and guidelines for use within the surgical division. Provide pharmaceutical expertise to any multidisciplinary working groups considering protocols, policies, guidelines and integrated care pathways in the specialist area. Assimilate and analyse clinical trial information on new pharmaceutical products intended for use within the surgical division for submission to the Area Prescribing and Medicines Optimisation Committee (APMOC). Ensure that an accurate medication history is obtained for each patient using the appropriate sources (GP, community pharmacist, patient/carer, clinic notes, nursing home, electronic patient record systems) Assist with prescribing to enable appropriate patient flow Deals with high level pharmaceutical queries and provide advice and information to patients/carers/nursing and medical staff in connection with drug treatment Provide a comprehensive clinical ward pharmacy service to the speciality and work with stakeholders to optimise resources and improve patient flow Work closely with the ward staff and GPs/community pharmacists where necessary to ensure timely and seamless discharge of patients Record all major interventions made Investigate and support the recording of adverse drug reactions Audit and risk manage selected areas of practice to promote continuous quality improvement by affecting change in practice. Participate in ASCR Divisional clinic audit meetings Maintain and develop medicines management systems in conjunction with patients/carers, ward staff and pharmacy staff. Supervise and contribute to the development of medicines management technicians and/or other dedicated pharmacy staff Contribute to the training of pharmacy undergraduates, medical students, junior doctors, pre- registration pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, allied health professionals and medical and nursing staff as appropriate. Train and mentor clinical pharmacy diploma students on aspects of the specialist area Act as an appraiser in the Pharmacy appraisals programme Ensure that all relevant procedures are adhered to, reviewed regularly and that all necessary records are completed Undertake to follow all departmental procedures in accordance with current local practices and legislative requirements Provide professional cover in the dispensary on a sessional basis Keep up to date with developments in Pharmacy to maintain a high level of professional knowledge and competence. Attend study days and courses as necessary for the development of the service and the individual Maintain a record of CPD Work with the specialty to comply with national and local patient safety drug alerts and initiatives and help with the implementation and recommendation of associated action plans Provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care to surgical patients in all clinical areas Person Specification
