Job summary

There is an exciting opportunity for Registered Mental Health Nurses to join the Forensic Inpatient Directorate at The Bracton Centre and Memorial Hospital - Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust.

We are a Trauma Informed Service, looking for dynamic and compassionate individuals. We are seeking to recruit nurses who are curious about the ways that adversity and traumas impact our patients' behaviours, functioning, clinical presentations and engagement. You will be supported to deliver high quality nursing to patients, in which your nursing therapeutic and relational skills will help our patients to feel safe, listened to, valued, engaged and empowered.

You will be supported to be a trauma responsive nurse, developing practices that avoid causing further harm, promote engagement and create a safe context for healing and recovery.

You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, where good communication supports the management of clinical and risk issues on the ward. You will ensure appropriate evidence-based practices are used, including Trauma Informed Care, a traffic light system for the prediction of violence and aggression and safety huddles.

The Forensic Directorate supports occasional rotation of staff to other wards to enable them acquire new skills, avoid burnouts and gain the full benefit and experience working in the forensic directorate. The post holder may hence be rotated to another ward as part of further development and to meet service needs.

Main duties of the job

Working autonomously within the parameters of the role implementing the delivery of quality nursing care, contributing to the physical, psychological, social, recreational, and spiritual care in a recovery focused and trauma-informed way, through therapeutic engagement and activities, and taking steps to address any issues that arise. Leading on and undertaking activities to ensure that the fundamentals of care are met, such as physical and psychological safety, emotional and social support, nutrition, hydration, hygiene, and comfort. Co-ordinating and evaluating collaborative patient-centred care, offering choices and opportunities to empower patients whenever possible. Getting feedback and improving plans with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT). Providing accurate information about care in an accessible format to patients and their relatives / carers, and regularly engaging with carers and families within the remits of confidentiality. Promoting service user engagement, supporting emotional regulation, and creating a safe context for healing and recovery. Liaising and working positively with members of the multidisciplinary team and partner organisations. Developing the management of care needs through: Initial data collection Monitoring of individual service user / patient progress Feedback and discussion. Producing reports and in-care reviews. Devising a plan of care and interventions under supervision.

Job responsibilities

You will be supported to be a trauma responsive nurse, developing practices that avoid causing further harm, promote engagement and create a safe context for healing and recovery.

You will have access to multiple sources of support, including supervision, preceptorship, MDT working, training and staff support sessions. These will enable you to use communication and connection to patients to create safety, support emotional regulation, reframe frustrating behaviours and reflect on your own practice.

You will be part of a service focussed on re-emphasising relational security within the physically secure setting, such as providing patient choice when possible, collaboration and transparency/
