SOUTH WEST LONDON PATHOLOGY
BASED AT
ST GEORGE'S UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS NHS FOUNDATION TRUST
CONSULTANT PAEDIATRIC AND PERINATAL PATHOLOGIST
APPOINTMENT
Applications are invited for a fixed term Consultant Paediatric and Perinatal Pathologist to join our Cellular Pathology department. The post is a (whole) full time Consultant post with 10 programmed activities (PAs) and the post holder will be based at St. George's Hospital. The post will include perinatal post-mortem (autopsy) pathology, placental pathology and routine paediatric surgical pathology.
This is a combination of a replacement post due to reconfiguration of current consultant programmed activities working less than full time and increased demand related to service expansion.
The appointee is expected to have had specialist training in paediatric and perinatal pathology and to have passed the Final Paediatric Pathology Fellowship Exam of the Royal College of Pathologists or equivalent.
Main duties of the job
DUTIES OF THE POST
The appointee, together with consultant colleagues in the Department, will be responsible for the provision of the paediatric and perinatal pathology reporting service. This will include:
Participation in the perinatal and hospital consented paediatric post-mortem service. Reporting placentas. Reporting routine paediatric surgical pathology. Involvement in relevant clinicopathological meetings and MDTs. Contribution to the training and supervision of junior medical staff
About us
The Cellular Pathology department at St George's Hospital is the hub for the South West London Pathology Service. This incorporates diagnostic cytology and histopathology from Croydon University Hospital and St George's Hospital and histopathology from Queen Mary's Hospital Roehampton. This is a busy department and is a friendly and supportive environment in which to develop specialist expertise.
In 2014 St George's linked with an adjacent hospital to form a 'hub-and-spoke' model for delivery of Pathology Services in South West London. Known as 'South West London Pathology' (SWLP), the Hub is located at St George's and has a separate management structure from that of St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. SWLP provides diagnostic cytology and histopathology services for St George's and Croydon University Hospitals. As a result, the yearly cytopathology and histopathology workloads in 2019 were 5700 and 56000 respectively (the latter including paediatric biopsies and resections and placentas). The specialist reporting service is currently being delivered by 27 WTE consultants. A hospital post-mortem service is supported by consultants attached to the cellular pathology department, although the mortuary itself is not part of the governance structure of SWLP.
Job description
Job responsibilities
The appointee, together with consultant colleagues in the Department, will be responsible for the provision of the paediatric and perinatal pathology reporting service.
Participation in the coroners paediatric post-mortem service is not a compulsory requirement of this post. The post holder will however be permitted to undertake commensurate Coronial post-mortem work outside the NHS Consultant Job Plan subject to clinical lead approval, Coronial agreement, time shifting and service constraints.
The successful candidate will be expected to work with professional colleagues and local managers in the efficient running of the Service and will share with Consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the Trusts system of governance, and audit and maintain their CME/CPD. They will also have a commitment to participate in the Trusts professional development and to ensure their suitability for revalidation with the GMC. The appointee will be expected to observe the Trusts agreed policies and procedure, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters, and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the Trust.
The consultant appointed will have a continuing responsibility for the care of specimens from patients in their charge and for the proper functioning of the department. They will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of their patients and specimens and the running of the clinical department.
The configuration of responsibilities will be reviewed from time to time and the appointee will be expected to work with consultant colleagues to provide a reliable and expeditious service. Compliance with the requirements of good clinical governance and any new national arrangements for medical recertification will be expected.
